Resolve Lite 11.0.b2 and GTX-670

PostMon Jul 21, 2014 9:21 pm

I have an older computer which recently laid down and a newer one I have just finished assembling.

DaVinci Resolve Lite 10b played okay on the old computer and this newer one.

Resolve 11.0.b2 and the previous beta report that the CUDA card is not detected.

This computer is built with :-

ASUS P9X790 Motherboard.
16Gb Memory.
Intel i7-3030K 3.2GHz CPU
2 x GTX-670 Video cards.
Windows 7 Home Premium.
OS on OCZ Vector SATA6 SSD.

It is not mission critical as I can still use Premiere but it would be a bonus if Resolve can be made to work as Resolve Lite 10 is excellent at grading my SI2K footage.

One day when the cargo plane comes home and brings a good thing for the people, Resolve may even recognise the SI2K LUTs but that might be a dream as the LUTs are generated in Iridas Speedgrade On Set embedded in the DVR2 OS of the camera. In the meantime the Alexa LUTs are adequate.

Speedgrade is now part of the Adobe package.

Any clues on how to make Resolve see the CUDA function would be much appreciated.

I suspect you were using a Resolve version earlier than 10.1.5 previously. With version 10.1.5 and higher, we need to use CUDA 6. In a Windows environment, the CUDA bits that Resolve needs are in the NVIDIA video card driver. So updating your NVIDIA driver will probably help. What version are you currently using?

The updated driver I downloaded yesterday. It is NV Driver for Windows 7 64bit VER 327_23.

I have heard that Resolve does not necessarily like the latest drivers but sometimes a specific older driver version. Resolve apparently either won't get out of bed or goes slowly.

The version which plays nice is 10.0.0b.046.

As I comprehend, maybe wrongly, my informant thinks that this older driver business may only apply to older iterations of Resolve. However if this remains so, is this version archived somewhere accessable? If you could identify the driver version known to work with this current beta, that info would be much appreciated.

Regards from here in the West.

Sorry for stealing your thread but I'm having the same problem on my mobile workstation with GTX 850m. It seems Resolve cannot detect this card and falls back to Intel HD 4600 which is integrated in the CPU. I'm running the latest nvidia drivers.

You need at least NVIDIA GeForce driver 334.89 for 10.1.5 and V11. 335.23 is also known to work. And probably any WHQL driver later than that will be OK.

Thanks for that Dwaine. The error message did not come up after install of update. The download site I got the abovementioned version from suggested it was the latest. The Geforce website is not the paragon of clarity for luddites like me.

Postscript to above. I managed to get Resolve to play but have run into a glitch, likely hardware related, strangely not unlike one I had with the old computer which eventually expired.

Resolve opens, starts a project. Initially, as soon as I went anywhere near an image frame in any of the functions including thumbnails, I was getting a freeze of the mouse cursor and wipeout of the keyboard, both of which are on USB ports.

I checked what memory speed the computer BIOS was selecting on auto and it was 1333 not 1600. After manually selecting 1600.

That seemed to improve things but one must be very patient and gentle to avoid making a sudden move before the computer has time to have a think, otherwise it will freeze the mouse and keyboard.

This same misbehaviour stamps its foot in Resolve 10 which furthur prompts me to think it is a hardware or configuration issue.

Any hints will be appreciated.

When getting nVidia drivers you should always get them direct from nVidia.com.

What BIOS is your motherboard on? And which sockets are the keyboard and mouse plugged in to?

Hello again Adam.

The BIOS is American Megatrends v0604.

There is a row of four USB ports on the top rear of the upright tower arrangement. The keyboard is in the second, the mouse in the third as viewed from the rear.

Memory is Geil 1600MHz DDR each 4Gb in the correct slots ( blue ) according to the manual.

The freeze usually occurs during a mouse movement but will occur when using JKL or spacebar for play/stop. Staying off the mouse as much as possible and doing frequent CTRL+S saves seems to put off the inevitable.

It usually locks up when the color mode is being used or the mouse cursor passes over any image.

The machine also sometimes puts up an "overclocking has failed" error message on boot-up, so there is something not quite right yet.

I have not played with that function but left it on "auto".

Any hints appreciated and thanks for your comments.

You might want to look at updating the BIOS. I'm not sure of your exact board as there is no Asus P9X790 board, but going by a few of the Asus P9X79 boards that BIOS looks like the first one they ever released (they don't even go down as early as 0604), and on the 2 boards I looked at they've done around 21 updated BIOS's since then, including memory stability updates, a lot of USB compatibility updates and new CPU support

If your BIOS is that old you will need to go into the BIOS Utilities section and download the P9X79-CAP-Converter as this will convert your old style BIOS to the new style then you should be able to install the latest BIOS. As always though be warned that if something goes wrong during a BIOS update it can kill the board and you would need to get in touch with ASUS to fix it if it does kill it (although I've only ever had it happen once in 10 years of system building so it is rare)

Adam.

Please accept my belated thanks for helping me get my problem sorted. My silence came about as a result of my breach of the names only requirement.

I was unable to progress past the BIOS mod to convert to CAB files from ROM files. However, updating to the last ROM BIOS update has worked fine. Resolve is indeed a powerful toolset. It plays nicely with my SI2K files after GoPro free was installed. Normally I would install my Neo4K version of cineform however that probably needs upgrading.

Cheers.

Did you try updating to the CAB version now you're on the last ROM BIOS?

I tried the CAB conversion update but it did not take. The system reverted to the very earliest BIOS which I had to again update. There is some donkey-trap built in there somewhere which obviously works very well to protect the system. So I decided not to push my luck because it works fine on the last ROM BIOS update. I am not on Windows 8 so the final ROM update is probably all I will need.

You might want to get in touch with Asus. It would be a shame not to be able to update to the later BIOS's as they are the ones that enable you to use the newer Ivybridge-e and Xeon CPU's on that motherboard, and it's those CPU's which will also give turn your PCI-e sockets from PCI-e 2 to PCI-e 3
