BMDCodecMJPG.DLL Causing Sony Vegas AVI Import Crash

PostFri Jul 25, 2014 6:25 am

Recently had a problem where whenever we tried to import an uncompressed AVI file into Sony Vegas Movie Studio 10 (Win XP Pro 32-bit and Windows 7 Home 64-bit platforms) the program would crash with the following error:

Problem Description
Application Name: Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum
Application Version: Version 10.0 (Build 179)
Problem: Unmanaged Exception (0xc0000005)
Fault Module: C:\PROGRA~2\BLACKM~1\BLACKM~2\BMDCOD~3.DLL
Fault Address: 0x180F1E86
Fault Offset: 0x00011E86

Fault Process Details
Process Path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.0\VegasMovieStudioPE100.exe
Process Version: Version 10.0 (Build 179)
Process Description: Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum
Process Image Date: 2010-04-20 (Tue Apr 20) 15:20:46

We systematically changed all the .dll file extensions to .dlp and noticed that the problem went away when the extension on the BMDCodecMJPG.DLL was changed (disabling it).

It appears that this is a driver file associated with Desktop Video.
What is this driver used for, and why might it be causing Sony Vegas to crash?
If this driver I disabled or removed, which program(s) will be affected and how?
It can always be disabled it when we import AVI file into Sony Vegas (which is not often), but we would like to have a cleaner solution.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

The file is used for the MotionJpeg files that the BM card captures in to. Without it you may not be able to capture into MotionJpeg or play back files captured in BM MotionJpeg.

Do you use a BM card with that version of Vegas? What driver version are you using as it would have to be quite old to support XP

We use the BM TVS. If I look up the driver version in Device Manager it says 1.8.0.0 file version 2.2.1.0

We only use Media Express for saving video from the switcher.

When you look in the BM control panel what version does it say in there?

Version 4.2.

BTW, upon further investigation, this only seems to happen with uncompressed AVI files straight from the camera. It does not seem to happen to AVI files downloaded from YouTube or footage that we edited and rendered as AVI.

An old D90 DSLR. The clip is not imported directly to Sony Vegas.
