I don't have any problems on my Clevo laptops either using Intel, but the Z97 and X99 boards use V3 of the Intel USB 3 controller and laptops use V2, also it's to do with how it's implemented into the board.
I had an Asrock Z97 extreme 6 for a while and I'm pretty sure it was stable on that but the bottom 16x slot turned out to only be a 2x instead of the usual 4x so I suspect they freed up resources by doing that.
People seem to forget that the more they jam into these boards the more they are sharing with each other. Sharing on the USB isn't normally an issue as most devices aren't affected by a system poll in the middle of something, but when it comes to the video capture through these BM devices they can't handle any kind of interruption.
