DaVinci 10.1.1 hard freeze Retina Mac Book Pro

PostMon Feb 24, 2014 7:43 pm

Complete system freeze happens at random. Most likely during scrubbing over clips or transitions.

System notes:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro10,1
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2.6 GHz
Memory: 8 GB
Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M
CUDA Driver Version: 5.5.28

Chain is rMBP -ThunderBolt-> LaCie 2big 6TB -ThunderBolt-> UltraStudio Express

Happens with media on internal SSD and external over ThunderBolt, Video GPU OpenCL and CUDA selected, ProRes 422 HQ clips, in Color tab and Deliver tab, no other apps running.

Ideas? Thoughts? Help?

What version of OSX are you running? Have you tied the latest version for Resolve?

That GPU only has 1GB of VRAM. If you run any other app that uses the GPU it will have less GPU VRAM available for Resolve. Resolve 10 really needs 2GB to run smoothly with HD footage.

Also turn off "Automatic graphics switching" in the System Prefs under Energy Saver.

I'm on Resolve 10.1.2, Mac OS 10.9.2 and a MacBook Pro Retina (10,1 2.7 GHz 16 GB) and I'm having the same problem. Every 20 minutes or so, resolve hangs the entire machine, locking up the cursor and all the displays. Eventually after about a minute, it unsticks. It's making me look really bad in front of clients!

Hey,

Sorry to hear you're having problem.
I had the same problem Davinci quick as soos as I want to open the movie file. I was wondering if anyone can tell me which mac system is definitively better in entry level. I am thinking of getting a mac mini to run DaVinci 10 on it, is that a good choice? Thanks

While 1 GB VRAM (see OP) is bit small, 2 GB should be fine for HD ProRes. If you are not using H.264 natively, I'd look for problems elsewhere, like checking disk structure with Disk Warrior.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.
