Best proxy practices in Resolve : your opinions

PostWed Sep 24, 2014 3:42 pm

Hello,

Please don't hammer me if this could be found on the forum (I looked for with "proxy" keyword), but I didn't find something accurate. Also please, try to avoid rtfm yells, I've always read all of them whenever a new version of Resolve was released :D

So actually I'm collecting advices about working with proxies in a workflow that includes FCP and Resolve, especially when :
- I would use R3d 4k files
- I would NOT but PR 4444 instead
I'm not used to work with proxy files...

1/ Did I miss a way to automate the transcode of "whatever mov" footage in Resolve, as possible with raw DNG ?
2/ Above all, what's best (or simply to do hehehehe), after having graded proxy files in Resolve, to reconnect to native rushes in order to go on cutting in my NLE ? (or any other way to grab native - not proxy - files graded back in NLE)
I don't have particular problems working with XML roundtrip by the way...

At this point, I'm sure I kept bad slacker practices  (tricks based on replacing folders with same names inside in the finder hehehehehe).

THX in advance, it would make my... week ;)

Ok, to be more precise, I found that thread which helped a bit viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7928 , and this one too : http://www.hurlbutvisuals.com/blog/2013 ... -workflow/

But please, I really need your opinions about different ways to relink to native files, and steps not to forget since the beginning.
The manual is not very helpful about this topic...

Yep Alessandro, thx a lot

Actually I was not totally unaware, to be honest... I've been grading on Resolve very frequently since version 9, but... I thought it was possible to use the DPX workflow ("add to proxy manager") for every format. Actually not, and therefore your post is indeed a good summary...

Now, to go a bit further, I wonder wether you follow this workflow or not when a "last moment change" occurs in the cut, so that you're grading what corresponds to an XML... which won't match the new NLE timeline anymore :) .

In brief, ok for XML roundtrip :
1 proxy making > 2 xml export > 3 NLE xml import > 4 cut on proxies > 5 NLE xml export > 6 resolve import without "automatically import files....." > 7 grading on native files .....

What if you're at stage 7, but the TL changes (for whatever reasons) at stage 4, not to lose what you've graded at this point ?
You re-export thus go back to stage 4, or just manually add new footage in Resolve and go on ?
Or else  ?
