Upgraded to 10.0, lots of problems capturing but 9.x works

PostSun Mar 16, 2014 6:25 am

I am using a 4K Extreme card on Arch Linux x64 with the new 10.0 drivers. I am unable to capture at all with kernel 3.12.13-rt21, trying to start a capture just produces this:

And the application freezes until the computer is rebooted.

I tried a non-RT kernel version 3.13.6 and it is semi-working with that version. I can start captures but I cannot get full frame rate (around 27fps on a 30fps source) and it still produces a kernel BUG (and some blackmagic module warnings):

Mar 16 10:14:40 localhost kernel: BlackmagicIO: WARNING: Ran out of free input frames

and these repeat on for a long time.

I also tried an older LTS kernel, version 3.10.33, and this time I do not get a kernel BUG, but the "WARNING: Ran out of free input frames" is still spammed to dmesg, and my capture rate is even slower now, I can only get 20fps instead of 30.

Also when trying to unload the modules with these kernels, I always get:

BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 22s! [rmmod:12950]

And rmmod hangs until I reboot the computer.

Any idea what could be wrong here? I've been using version 9.7.2a18 without issues, but I decided to try 10.0 and now I don't think I can even go back since the firmware has been updated using the 10.0 drivers.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Since I know Arch Linux isn't officially supported, I tried installing Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS also. Same issue there as with the LTS kernel in Arch, lots of warnings in dmesg and slow input capturing.

The kernel modules are created to work with official vanilla kernel. The RT kernel you were trying to use with Arch is very heavily modified. It's extreamly unlikely you will be able to get the modules to work with an RT kernel. I'm amazed the modules even loaded.

Did you build the modules, or did you just install pre-built modules? What software are you trying to capture with?

I'm using my own capture software, and built the modules from source using DKMS.

Actually I have been using an older RT kernel rather successfully for a couple years now, even in shipped products. It's very necessary in my case as it keeps the system latency both low and (most importantly) steady, it does not fluctuate wildly like with the vanilla kernel, even when there's no other programs running besides X and the capture. And I know there are others using RT kernels with Blackmagic devices successfully, particularly some of the Ubuntu Studio people who need very low-latency audio (and video).

I seem to recall there was something somewhere within either the code or documentation for the driver/SDK that mentioned the realtime -rt kernels, so I figured that Blackmagic was at least aware of it, but I could be wrong.

I do think it's crucial that they support these kernels however, given the real-time nature of the products people develop with their cards, otherwise I'll have to look for other solutions if I cannot provide predictable latency to my customers.

On a side note, I switched to an NVIDIA GPU with the proprietary driver instead of using the onboard Intel graphics (or nouveau which was too slow also), and the capture speed is back to normal (at least under Ubuntu 12.04), however I still get those thousands of warnings spammed to dmesg.

I'm familiar with the RT patchset. I've used it myself quite a bit. The rt kernel is mentioned in the documentation: it explicitly states that the rt kernels are not supported. You may be able to get an rt kernel to work now and then, but it is a complete crap shoot what the results will be. The RT patchset changes between kernel version are quite drastically different to keep sync with changes in mainline. How that effects the interfaces that the decklink card uses can be just as drastic.

The granularity of latency delays in the mainline kernel is microscopic compared to other factors. If your purpose is for streaming, encoding delays for things like GOP size, decoding buffer size, etc. are just so huge in comparison, that it's not even close to being worth the trouble. If your purpose is something more exotic like software that tries to analyze and react to the video in real time (facial recognition or performance art for instance) then kernel latency might start to come into play, but it would be way down on the list of things that could cause latency delays.

For what it's worth, kernel 3.14 is going to mainline the SCHED_DEADLINE CPU scheduler, which should go a long way in allowing software to provide latency guarantees.

If whatever software you are using draws the video input to the screen without de-coupling the capture and drawing process with something like a ringbuffer that allows the write pointer to freely pass the read pointer or some sort of message queue, the drawing process will block the capture process. And the Nouveau / Intel drivers can not draw nearly as fast as the proprietary Nvidia driver. Given the feedback you've given, process blocking IO would be the primary suspect...

Thanks for the insight, I was not aware about the deadline CPU scheduler (just the IO scheduler).

The application is medical vision (mostly surgical), so hard real-time with a fixed capture->render latency of <16ms is mandatory. However the appliance can also record this video in real-time as well, but that's where the latency jumps cause problems. Usually we run between 5-10ms and all is well, but sometimes if you are recording, the encoder/muxer gets some extra time and that causes the renderer to drop a frame. I would much rather the encoder drop frames than the main render display, but I'm not sure that is something I could control from a software perspective.

Thanks

Ah, that's a use case you don't run into in this forum very often and make a lot more sense in regards to low latency issues. At that point, you have to also consider that the closed driver / SDK may also be a limiting factor and you really don't have much of a way to figure out it's limits except to just test it manually.

There is also the consideration that since your use case is quite different than most people's who have used the SDK in a Linux environment. The software being developed may be using code paths in the SDK that are not well tested out.

One thing I forgot to mention, I will say that the Ubuntu kernels are not vanilla, they actually have a lot of patches, and the (mainline, real vanilla, non-RT) kernels that we were using on Arch Linux were the ones that would brick the decklink cards when trying to update the firmware, yet works just fine in Ubuntu, which makes no sense at all to me. I wonder exactly what it is that causes the firmware to fail, other then "unsupported distro", there has to be a good technical reason I think.

It's much less about how much the kernel is patched, as opposed as to what in the kernel is changed by the patch. The RT patchset changes some very lowlevel core interfaces and how they behave. Distro specific patch sets tend to be bug fixes that haven't been merged into mainline yet, or extra bells and whistles. They rarely modify core functionality.

I use a Gentoo kernel, and it is patched also. But it's mostly out-of-tree drivers and bug fixes.

Reuben,

We are still having major issues with the 10.0 and 10.1 drivers even with Ubuntu (14.04) and stock kernel.

I get "BlackmagicIO: WARNING: Ran out of free input frames" wrote to dmesg 30-60 times a second depending on the mode used. A regular 1080i59 mode over SDI seems to work fine (that message does not appear), but anything that needs more bandwidth than that (1080p60 or dual-stream 3D) just gives me the above message and no signal is ever detected.

Do you have any ideas on how to fix this? Or if not, is it possible to downgrade the firmware to use the older 9.x drivers? I was not successful in just downgrading the drivers themselves.

EDIT: I'm only seeing this problem with 4K Extreme cards, I have an older HD Extreme 3D card that seems to work just fine.

The 4k serise is quite new, so there's always the chance that there are rough edges in their firmware or driver support. I also have been using an older HD Extreme 3D card and have not had any issues with the 10.x drivers. But I also haven't had need for anything over 1080p, so I'm not sure I could be of much help.

I don't think there's anything preventing you from downgrading. However I'm not sure what the support is like for the 4k series of cards in those older drivers / firmware.

Yea it looks like the firmware is not downgraded when installing an older driver, so it's incompatible or something as it won't let me capture unless I go back to the new driver.

If the 4K cards are having issues, IMO they should recall the broken ones and replace them, or provide a firmware/driver fix, OR continue to sell the HD Extreme cards.

Or you know, SOMETHING. Currently we are dead in the water and have had to do a full stop on production of our machines as the capture cards no longer work... Black magic does not respond to my inquiries either.

Another HUGE showstopper with the new cards/drivers is that the HDMI EDID is now completely missing, it just refuses to send one, so compatibility is now shot and we've also had to stop production for that issue as well.

Trying to source enough older cards is not working for us either. Seriously considering switching to Viewcast or some other Linux-friendly card that works correctly (at least the Viewcast supports non-broadcast resolutions as well, something we need, and something Blackmagic says they don't care about).

We have an immediate need for hundreds of cards.

Holy crap dude. How many capture cards are you using?

Are you trying to force the downgrade, or just installing the old drivers to see if it does it on it's own? By default the autostart runs BlackmagicFirmwareUpdaterGui which checks status to see if firmware can be upgraded. Only then does it run the actual firmware loader BlackmagicFirmwareUpdater.

Try running BlackmagicFirmwareUpdater directly from the console to see if it will overwrite the old firmware.

If you crack that file open with a hex editor, you will see that the BlackmagicFirmwareUpdater has a few commands that aren't listed when it prints out the usage syntax. One of them is "force". So try that as a command and see if it works. Would probably be something like:

Code: Select all
BlackmagicFirmwareUpdater update force [device]

or
Code: Select all
BlackmagicFirmwareUpdater force [device]

Not sure if [device] designation is just the card index number or something more elaborate. I've never needed to downgrade firmware, so I'm not certain this will work.

Looks like this is a 4K Extreme issue only.

Did some more testing today, tried some HD Extreme cards, all had 0x4b firmware but some had older 9.x drivers and some had 10.1a11 driver... none of them had any EDID issues.

But all the 4K Extreme cards I tried (they had 0x58 firmware IIRC) refused to send an EDID to the source when trying to capture.

You could also use a Mac or a Windows system to force a downgrade. It might be simpler then trying to force it in linux.

So that could help you get those cards back to 9.x in the short term to get them running again. The API for 10 is quite a bit different and could require changes to the code. You could get help for that through developer@blackmagicdesgin.com Unfortunately my group does not answer those emails.
