Blackmagic design: why such a name?

Hi there,

I was just wondering what were the motivations to call a company "Black magic design"?
I definitely doesn't sound like random and would be interested to know more about the story behind it.

Their products are so unbelievably good that they're like magic ? But "Magic Design" sounds cheap and cheesy... Blackmagic Design sounds special and fearfully effective.

Well there is a lot of Black Magic going on in the products itself

i've always found it amusing and ironic how many of the forum users are christians using blackmagic to technologically enhance the worship experience

I don't know the history behind the name but I'll try and run it past some people here and let you know my findings.

So the story I've been told is that the founders of the company just really liked the name. I'm assuming it just sounded good rolling off the tongue?

Right from the first post I knew it would be funny

If I can piece together the story correctly, Grant Petty was the founder of Digital Voodoo before Blackmagic. The two names have obvious similar roots.

PS, I'd love to receive harrassing PMs, particularly if they are sexually harassing. It's just nice to know somebody cares.
