U-matic Lo-Band tape and PAL BVU

PostFri Aug 21, 2015 9:43 pm

Hi all.

Please, can anyone tell me if it's possible to play a Lo-Band tape into a PAL Sony BVU-900 series VCR (e.g. BVU-920P, BVU-950P) with no issue?

Thanks in advance.

My Sony VO9850P will play both lo and hi band u-matic.

The BVU 800 series only played Hi-band but not sure about the 900 series.

Hi Baz, thanks for the answer. I knew that only NTSC BVU-900 series decks can play Lo-Band tapes in colour, while PAL BVU-900 series decks play in B/W. Does anybody know if it's true? Thanks again in advance.

NTSC BVU is normal u-matic as the lower bandwidth of the subcarrier (3.38Mhz) was able to be retained.
PAL unfortunately has a higher subcarrier of 4.43Mhz and thats where BVU was needed as 'hi-band'.

The later Sony umatic decks provided dual uses.
I also have a Sony VO5630 that has been modified for both lo-band AND hi-band playback.

So there is still a little chance that a later model like the BVU-920P will play regularly conventional Lo-Band U-matic tapes... isn't it?
