Wanted a URSA Mini, Bought a Sony fs700

PostTue Sep 01, 2015 6:45 pm

So...erm...yeah. I wanted a URSA Mini i had the cash but the release date came and went...
so instead of waiting around letting paid work pass by i decided on a Sony fs700.
WOW what an Amazing camera with lots of picture profile settings, Solid Software, Reliable, No Sun Black Spots, no Hot/Dead pixcels, and an absolute low light MONSTER!
The 8 Bit internal codec has more dynamic range than i thought,
and grades very nice in resolve, 200 fps is jaw dropping, So now i need to squeeze out the 2k and 4k RAW from the SDI out. Some of my jobs require 10bit prores422 1080p, so comes the question of the Blackmagic Video assist...
4k to HD prores via SDi, This is perfect for me, So is it available now...end of august...maybe?
Or do i have to go to another brand AGAIN?
Stu.

Had a look at the Ninja Assassin specs and theres no SDi in, poo.
The FS700 2k 4k out is via SDi only, that atomos looked like the one,
ah-well, the wait/search continues...

Good call.

I've been an FS700 owner since last year and due to the delay on the Ursa Mini went ahead and got an Odyssey 7Q. I would trust the O7Q over anything Atomos has put out. Lensauthority.com has used models that already have the Sony FS Raw option installed, and the most recent software update allows you to do 4K ProRes to 60p and continuous 240fps in ProRes at 2K.

IMO the O7Q or O7Q+ really unleash the 700 and turn it into a completely different beast.

They specifically released that one without SDI to keep cost down...the original Shogun has SDI for about $400 more (bare-bones version).

You'll need not only a 4k via SDi capable recorder but one who can read and debayer the 2k/4k RAW output of the FS700.

Up until today this is the Odyssey 7Q with the Sony FS-RAW Option or the Atomos Shogun...

Forgot to mention that you should definitely get the 7Q+. It was made for the FS700.

I'm giving it a couple days before I cancel my order. It's best not to post deadlines you can't keep no matter what business you're in.

Sound Devices AKA "Video Devices" has a new recorder/monitor out that has SDI, and records 4K using ProRes up to 4.4.4, the Pix E5, see: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1 ... rding.html

I'm in a very similar boat, I had my heart set on an URSA Mini 4.6K

But then as time went by, my brain gradually took back control and I went for a Sony PMW-F3 instead.
Basically is like a heavier FS700, but waaaaaay cheaper (no 4K or slow motion either).

I too am eagerly waiting for the BMD VA!! :-D
Had to rent the Atomos Shogun on a few occasions :-/
Very tempted by the Video Devices PIX-E5! But doesn't make much sense to me to spend even more on a recorder than the camera itself cost :-o

As a FS700 owner, you really should be considering the Odyssey to get the most out of your camera. However... that then pushes up the total cost to be scarily close to FS7 pricing territory which I view as a far far better camera.

We use an FS700 with the 7Q+at my day job and, while I think it's an amazing camera, the image is definitely not as organic and pleasing as BM cameras are.

The 7Q+ is a total rip off. The base price of $2.4K only gets you an advertisement of the recorder. You have to spend another $1K to unlock it's 4K and RAW options. Then you'll want to buy a battery plate and some batteries. All in all, you'll end up spending about $4K for this damn thing. Unfortunately it's the only practical option for the FS700.

Perhaps this thread should move to the "off topic" section?

I also had flashbacks to waiting for my original BMCC and jumped ship. Got a c100 and am pretty happy.

Might revisit URSA mini in a couple years when he firmware is mature and they drop the price. Seems like all the camera anyone needs.

The 50% of the Cinematography section is off topic. Not much talk in here about cinematography. I think the forum needs more defined sections.

I assume the OP will be a touch miffed given that he bought an FS700 because he didn't want to wait for the URSA Mini.... and then Sony promptly announced a replacement for the FS700 is coming next week AND dropped the price on the FS700 by $1,000 and is throwing in a Metabones EF->E adapter in the US.

Even I'm kinda thinking of adding an FS700 to my kit of this deal reverberates up here to Canada. Vistek (our big dealer here in Toronto) is still listing the FS700 as a special order at the old price unfortunately.

I'm hopefully the new camera from Sony leads to FS700 being pushed down to F3 level prices!

The FS700 is a LOT of camera for $4000. That said, you need the 7Q to get the full Monty as it were. That's another $4000.

Still, $8000 out the door for what the FS700 w/7Q+ gives you isn't touched by any other camera (yet). I bought mine just over a year ago. Still think it's competitive with anything else available and will be for a couple more years at least. Was a solid investment for me.

I wouldn't say it's a low light monster either. Better than my BMCC, but not mind blowing.
