Panasonic Varicam LT reveal

PostThu Feb 11, 2016 3:55 am

Interesting read about the new Panasonic Varicam LT. Shares some characteristics with the URSA Mini such as a magnesium body and a smaller version of Panasonic's Varicam 35 similar to the Mini being a smaller version of the URSA.

http://cinescopophilia.com/the-panasoni ... announced/

"The VariCam LT will be available at the end of March in two packages, suggested list price $18,000 (body only) and suggested list price $24,000 (body + AU-VCVF10G viewfinder)."

Nice camera for only $18k body only and $24K for camera and the nice viewfinder. Now, let's see...
I can get two URSA Mini 4.6 cameras complete with shoulder/handle,and viewfinder and one 4K Mini for the same price, and have some change left for the battery and CFast cards.... Or, I can get the new Varicam... Hum, which one to get?

I think I will save my money (what little I have left), and get a Micro Cinema camera and the URSA Mini viewfinder, and get Ryan to convert it with his Wooden Camera BM EVF kit, and mount it to the Micro Cinema camera, now that is $995, camera body + $1500 viewfinder and $300 EVF Mod kit. That's a total of $2795. I just saved $21K. True it will not be the same image, but... Then I could get the Mini 4.6 kitted out and still be $17K ahead, and probably get better results than the Varicam will get. But Rick, it looks like a nice camera anyway. Thanks.

BBC will buy the Varicam because it will 'work' whereas we will buy the URSA Mini and expect some 'workarounds'!

Matthew Allard has a more detailed report on the Varicam LT:

http://www.newsshooter.com/2016/02/11/e ... price-tag/

"The base price for a working camera including the Panasonic EVF, shoulder pad, grip and arm, as well as a couple of media cards will set you back close to $30,000US."

Here's a much higher resolution photo:

BBC will actually buy ten of the Varicams cause they can afford it. I may, sometime later in the year, be able to afford one UM4.6.
Thanks again Blackmagic Design for what you are doing for the have nots, even with the work arounds.

And to think BBC shot the 'Life on Earth' series on the original Varicam at 720P. Who needs 4K?

Here's RedShark's take: http://www.redsharknews.com/production/ ... ower-price

From Redshark, a nice view of the EVF hookup to the camera:

Wow Rick! Amazing cinemacamera. Not the same price as the ursa mini 4.6k, but I also don't think we should compare it with that. What the ursa lacks to me is, internal ND, 2 native iso options (800 and 5000) and 2k 240fps in cropmode. Easy switch between pl and canon ef. Amazing specs. So I guess it would be more on par with the specs of the Red Scarlet-W when the Red xlr bracket is added to that. It will ofcourse be interesting how well the image of the ursa mini holds up against the Panasonic. The mini is without doubt a great budget option, but the people that were looking in the sony F5, canon c300mk2 or red scarlet-W range now have a new very interesting option I think.
