SDI

Hello I am trying to get into video production, and have noticed the large boasts of the SDI interface on black magic products,
Could someone explain how this works?
Also is the SDI in and Out port used for Daisy chaining cameras and other equipment like thunderbolt, or is it just for two way communication between two devices like monitors?
