Blackmagic's 7/2/17 webcast

PostTue Feb 07, 2017 1:07 am

Is it just me or were the camera shots really soft looking?
Was it the poor lighting, the cameras or the compression of the new Web Presenter?
The stills looked fine but I can get a better looking stream up-scaling Standard Def 2/3" broadcast quality cameras with a Decimator and streaming via a Decklink Card and OSB.

I'm guessing it was the terrible lighting . You would think a copy the size that Blackmagic has grown to could afford a few lights.

The new products look good

I don't think it was the lighting. I suspect that it was setup using low contrast LUTs in camera. This is typically used for filming to give better coloring options in post production. They probably should have used a standard broadcast setup which would have produced lower blacks and higher white levels.

Yeah I noticed a really low contrast when watching the broadcast.

I found the livestream pretty embarrassing for a company specializing in broadcast and live equipment.
Not only had the image been looking totally flat like they forgot to add a LUT to the film dynamic range or the blacklevels had been set completely wrong, but the voice was constantly clipping.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Yes, they make the stuff, but except for a few employees like Captain Hook, they do not seem to know how to use it, or the person running the ATEM was not paying attention to what he was doing?

Yes, not a good way to present a new Web live streaming setup. Perhaps they should have had Capt. Hook record and grade it for "delayed" live streaming. But then it would not have been "live"!

Maybe if the Hyperdeck had a headphone jack they could have monitored the audio and prevented the clipping. Why do they keep doing this, it's baffling.

I was also shocked that the pictures looked so flat and did not match. The softness could easily be explained in the compression so that did not bother me much. But to even talk on the stream about being able to creatively colour the cameras and then have them look so bad...

This was the worst webcast I've seen in the last few years! This is not the way to sell broadcast equipment in 2017.
Next time, please ask an expert to do the webcast.

Shocking to be honest, didn't last 5min with the constant audio clipping!

Let me add poor shot composition, and lack of a feed of the atem output and computer screen feed to the already long list of poor production gaffs. Step it up guys!!
