Laptop GPU, GTX 1070 or RTX 2060

PostTue Jan 29, 2019 8:25 pm

I have been doing some research as to what laptop I should buy that would fit my budget. With the advent of new RTX laptops i have two, pretty solid choices, the GTX 1070 which is 8GB and the 2060 thich is 6GB.

Now I know DaVinci likes all the vRAM you can throw at it, especially if I want to work at 4K, but the 2060 does seem to match it in performance whilist having the RT cores that may or may not prove usefull in the future. Regardless, any laptop I would buy would also have an 8th gen 6 core i7 and 16GB of RAM with a PCIe SSD.

What would you guys go for?

According to a Puget Systems article, 4k editing in Resolve calls for a minimum of 8GB VRAM.
I'm unable to post URL's but if you search for "Recommended Systems for DaVinci Resolve" it should be easy to locate.

One thing to be careful of is thermal throttling in laptops - There are laptops that can't dissipate the heat generated by having the GPU/CPU pushed for hours which cause them to temporarily limit their speed. The Dell XPS line is notorious for this issue.
