Spec Conflict: 4k SDI to HDMI COnverter

PostThu Apr 17, 2014 2:32 am

Trying to shop for 4K components. I am looking for a way to monitor some 4 K sources and i am specifically looking for the ability to do so on HD tv's. I have found conflicting specs from the BMD website and would like some clarification.

Specification in question: Can i monitor a 4k source on a HD TV...

From the page: http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/product ... ers/models

That bit in brackets is because the device has NO SDI Video Output. It's only has HDMI output (upto 4K).

If you check the formats supported:
HDMI Format Support
625/25 PAL, 525/29.97 NTSC, 525/23.98 NTSC, 720p50, 720p59.94, 720p60, 1080i50, 1080i59.94, 1080i60, 1080p23.98, 1080p24, 1080p25, 1080p29.97, 1080p30, 1080p50, 1080p59.94, 1080p60, 2048x1080p23.98, 2048x1080p24, 2048x1080p25, 3840x2160p23.98, 3840x2160p24, 3840x2160p25, 3840x2160p29.97, 3840x2160p30, 4096x2160p24

So. You are saying that the port that is labeled "SDI Out" just does nothing? Doubtful.

I have found that BMD can use "Creative" language that I find it easy to misunderstand. and i also have found that if something is not 100% Spelled Out than you better not count on it. Reading the lines of "Supported Resolutions" gives me ZERO confidence towards one answer or another in this question.

In all of the Blackmagic Mini Converters the SDI out is just a loop out, no processing or anything is performed on it. Since this is converter converts from SDI to HDMI, only the HDMI will have any processing applied to it.

As Chad said... Most SDI devices have a loop through. This allows you to connect multiple SDI devices that are not affected by the other devices in the chain.

There is only processing/conversion happening on the HDMI output.
