Intensity Shuttles on a USB hub

PostThu Sep 19, 2013 1:53 am

So I need at least 5 or 6, maybe more, Intensity Shuttles to use with Wirecast for live broadcasting. However, my computer doesn't have enough inputs for them all, so I am planning on getting two 7-way USB 3.0 hubs (I found one from Plugable that connects to AC power with a 4A power adapter)

However, will this hub be able to power at least 3 Intensity Shuttles sending HD feeds to wirecast at the same time? Or will the hardware just not have the capacity to do it? If so, what should I do? I have a mac with 2 thunderbolts and 2 USB 3.0, an i7 and SSD. And I plan on using two hubs, with 3 to 5 intensity shuttles in each one.

The most I have heard someone successfully using is TWO. The USB3 bandwidth required for uncompressed video is very high.

So.. good luck... I think you will need it.

For that many inputs... have you considered the ATEM TVS or 1ME?

The Decklink QUAD is also a possibility (limited to SDI input only).

The hub won't work. The shuttle pretty much uses all the bandwidth on 1 USB 3 controller so even trying to use the second socket connected to that controller can cause issues, so basically 2 USB 3 sockets means 1 Shuttle can be connected

Would I be able to buy a thunderbolt hub and get more than one shuttle on that because of thunderbolt's increased bandwidth, or would it be the same thing as USB?

I'm pretty sure you'd have the same issue there as well. You probably wouldn't get a continuous signal from each box

Where are you going to put all the shuttles with cables hanging out all over the place. Get Intensity Pros instead. Shuttles do not use hubs they connect direct to the mobo and it is device with its own ideas.

Getting Intensity pros won't help either as he doesn't have room for that many cards

If I were to get a motherboard on a custom PC with 5 PCIe's (3 PCIe x16 and 2 PCIe x1) and a few USB 3.0s, would I be able to connect 5 intensity pros, one to each PCIe, and a couple USB 3.0 shuttles then? I know that macbooks don't have custom motherboards so I'm considering a custom PC. The board is the Asus Gryphon Z87 in case anyone's interested. I also have the option of a Maximus VI.

I doubt a single system would be able to handle that many at once as I doubt there's enough bandwidth to cope with 7 different uncompressed streams. But if it did work it would be more likely to work on an X79 with an Ivy bridge-E CPU or a dual Xeon than on a Z87 board as it has more bus lanes to cope with data transfer, although I still think you'd have issues when it came to 7 uncompressed streams as that's well over 800MB/s worth of raw data. being fed in and converted on the fly.
Are you just wanting to feed the images in then straight out to wirecast or are you mixing them? If the former then you could just get a couple of systems as it doesn't matter. If the latter then you may want to look at the Atem's

I am planning on using at least 4 or 5 HD streams for a live broadcast, so yes it will require live mixing using wirecast.

If I were to use a Blackmagic ATEM, would I be able to output the feed via HDMI into an intensity shuttle and connect that to Wirecast via thunderbolt?

Yes. That was basically what my first response was attempting to point you towards
