I have such a converter and it works fine for converting SDI 1080i to SD analog.
First: Your stettings are OK (when input is SD - if not, set DIP1 to "on = processing")
The SDI to analog converter has three BNC-connectors as output.
1.) "Y or NTSC/PAL" here comes the composit signal (CVBS)
2.) "B-Y or S-Video Y" here comes the luminace-signal part from S-video
3.) "R-Y or S-Video C" here comes the color-signal part from S-video
You'll get a bw-signal, when connecting 2.) to a composite input, because it's luminace without color.
For connecting to a S-video-connector, you need to connect 2.) and 3.) using the right adaptor. You'll get a bw signal, when unsing a dammaged or false adaptor.
