HyperDeck Shuttle 2 - File xtension of recorded file?

PostTue Oct 16, 2012 7:19 am

Hi Folks,
I'm a bit confused. I have a Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 set to DNxHD MXF Recording. When I record from an SDI Source, which works fine by the way, the files on the SSD still show up as "capture0000.mov" Maybe this is a beginners question but shouldn't they show up as ".mxf" files?

Anyway, when I link them on Avid Media Composer 5.0.4 via AMA Quicktime Plugin, the files show up in my bin, video plays fine but I do not have audio!

Following the workflow from an AVID Forum and copying the files into the Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1 Folder, as they are suppost to be MXF Files, does not show them in the Media Tool!

What's wrong? Best regards

When you have the HyperDeck set to DNxHD MXF, you should have three files for each clip (one for the video and two for the audio). So if you recorded one clip onto the SSD then docked the SSD to a computer you'd see something like:
Capture0000A1.mxf
Capture0000A2.mxf
Capture0000V.mxf

These are the files you would place in your Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1 folder.

If you are getting .mov files, you'll want to connect your HyperDeck back up to your computer via USB and confirm that the HyperDeck utility is indeed set for AVID DNxHD MXF and not one of the other recording formats. If your HyperDeck will not lock to the MXF format, you'd likely want to give your nearest support office a call regarding the issue.

Hi,

If you have set the HyperDeck Shuttle to record DNxHD, but are capturing Standard Definition, you will still be recording Uncompressed 10bit Quicktime .mov files. This is because SD is not supported in the DNxHD standard. I have tried performing a quick test and I don't see any problems with these files and their audio in Media Composer. I would suggest checking if the file has audio if you open it in Quicktime.

If your files are importing without audio, or if you are capturing HD, the situation is much stranger. and I would suggest contacting your regional support office to troubleshoot this.

Dear Sarah, dear Chris,

thanks for the reply! This is obviously a problem with capturing SD Video on the DNxHD MXF Setting!
I have tried to set to DNxHD more than once and the setting is confirmed on the Hyperdeck Shuttle. I did capture SD Video and it shows up as ".mov" file. I can confirm that the file has Audio (checked via playback on the Shuttle) Quicktime Player also plays the video, but not the Audio - same as the Media Composer linked via AMA.
However, when I import the files into Media Composer (which takes like forever given that I have around 1 TB of captured files to deal with) Video and Audio is playing as it should!

The normal workflow would be to link with AMA which takes around 20 seconds for approx. 86 files - but then I have no audio.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

If you are capturing SD, then it won't be possible to capture into DNxHD. SD will be captured into uncompressed 10bit.

I'm really not sure why you are getting no audio. I have tried to perform the same test, using the same settings on the HyperDeck, and importing into Media Composer using AMA. But I do get audio. There may be some differences in my workflow that might make a difference, I used Media Composer on Mac for example. Maybe something is different if you are using Windows. I would suggest checking if the audio works on a different system. If the audio is there on the HyperDeck, I can't see any reason it would not play on a computer.

If you're still not getting audio however, I think this will be quite difficult to troubleshoot here. I would really suggest giving support a call using the numbers on the following page.

I've also set this up and tested to QuickTime Player on Windows and Mac. On both systems, audio follows the video. In Avid I'm not sure if there are some audio settings that we're overlooking, but with QuickTime Player, it's pretty straightforward and I can't find any audio specific settings.

I'm wondering if your computer's sound setting needs to be adjusted for your desired audio output. QuickTime would reference this setting for output, and maybe with the AMA tool in Avid it references similarly?

Short of this, I agree with Chris that if the issue persists, the best course of action would be to contact your nearest support office.

Thanks for the Info! I contacted support! But we couldn't solve it either! Obviously the Quicktime Components of MC 5.0.4 are outdated. I installed a newer version, it didn't change anything.

I upgraded to MC 5.5 Trial version this morning - that did the trick! Audio now plays fine. However, if you look at the console, MC still does not recognize the codec!
Anyway, Audio is now playing but the MC doesn't initialize the Nitris DX anymore - but that is another problem!

Thanks for your help!
