Deck Link SDI without 4:4:4 ok for grading

PostSat Oct 20, 2012 12:33 am

Beginner grading question here. I am purchasing the FlanderScientific LM-2461W and wanted to get the Deck Link SDI for now, since the Extreme 4K doesn`t ship yet.
The Deck Link SDI however only seems to be 4:2:2, will that be clean enough for grading, or do I need 4:4:4

I am outputting via rendered files, and then having a post house put it on tape, so I am only using it for monitoring.

Thanks for any input.

If your footage is 4:2:2 then yes, it will be fine for grading. If your footage is 4:4:4 and you've already digitized it, then it would be fine for grading as well, but the output of the Decklink SDI would be 4:2:2 for monitoring.

Detailed specifications for all the cards can be found here: http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/

A major difference between the Intensity Pro and the DeckLink SDI, is that one is an HDMI card, and the other is an SDI card.
