Asymmetrical exposure latitude work flow?

PostSat Mar 23, 2024 2:32 pm

The bmpcc 6k is my first cine camera. It has asymmetrical exposure latitude at different ISO

How does that affect the shooting process, versus a simple camcorder with presumed symmetrical exposure latitude? It seems like even choosing what ISO to use is not as simple as "pick the lowest ISO that doesn't underexpose"

Read the manual, find the exposure distribution chart and grab it in your phone.

The thumb rule is to put iso 400 or 3200 to choose native iso, then enable false color and see the distribution of light along the picture.
But not change iso to have more light or you find faster a sensor weakness like Fixed patter noise and more.

ISO is never an exposure tool, is a multiplier value of original exposure give you from shutter and iris and light that you can add with artificial light or reduced by Nd filter.

With the chart you can decide to use a different iso from native, but that not change your clipping value only apparence of picture.

Cc6k record braw only that mean later you can change iso between first or second native iso range.

Also in common camcorder you have a different dinamic range during different gain stage, is never really linear distribution.
