Saved Render

PostTue Mar 26, 2024 5:34 pm

Hi, I'm learning Davinci. When I have finished a project and I come to upload to YouTube a render is saved to Movies on my Mac. Can I delete this once the video has been uploaded or will this be needed in the future. If I delete it and associated files will I still be able to edit the video in Davinci if needs be. the 20 minute video I created today takes up 350GB on my hard drive as a saved render. Any advice much appreciated.

I take it that 350GB includes your source footage. It is a lot. Out of interest what codec was it shot in?
If you delete all the files they will be gone. You will not be able to edit them. Apart from your final render Resolve merely references the original files it does not copy them. I would suggest you get an external drive to archive your files to if you wish to keep them, and save an Export Project .drp file to go with them. I keep two external 3TB spinners just for archiving.

Thanks Charles, Yes it does include the source footage. Video was shot on iphone 15 Pro in HEVC. If I keep all my original images on the hard drive that I used to create the film do I still need them in my render files taking up room or are they not copied as you say only referenced. 350GB is a lot of memory if the original file images are not part of this. Is there a way to compress this before3 saving to external drive.

If you have done your final render(s) and know you will never need those source files again then you could delete them and just keep the renders. You could also go through the files and remove those that were no good or were not used in the final edit before archiving. The choice is yours. I personally like to keep everything that was shot, but as I use HD I usually have no more than 30-40GB of footage for each project.

Hi charles,
Thanks for the info about my saved renders. I have another query on the forum and wondered if you could help me with this. This was my question I posted yesterday: Hi, My Davinci just crashed. I have re-opened it and all my changes for the last 4 hours are missing. I have Backups turned on in Preferences to save every 15 minutes, I have located the file where it is supposed to be saved. How do I bring it back in to my project. Any advice is much appreciated.

Not something I have ever had to do but the how to is in the 18.6 Reference Manual starting from page 84, with the opening of a Project Backup on pages 85 and 86.
