Apple 13 inch retina display and ultrascopes

PostThu Oct 25, 2012 9:07 pm

I know (read) the thunderbolt equipped Macbook Air does not have the horsepower to run Ultrascopes

Apple just release a 13 inch retina display with the following specs, will this do the job?

2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz) with 3MB shared L3 cache
Intel HD Graphics 4000

No NVidia graphic chip though

Hi,

I'm afraid I can't offer anything concrete at the moment since neither the MacBook Air or Pro with Retina has been officially tested because we do not offer USB 3.0 drivers. However, I had personally tried UltraScope from a Cinema Camera with the MacBook Air, and it didn't work for me.

But I also happen to have been able to briefly test a few things with the new 13" Retina MacBook Pro yesterday, and I was able to get UltraScope running from the Cinema Camera in the two-up mode; six-up would not work because the maximum scaled resolution is around 1680x1050. I didn't have the chance to test this for more than a few moments, so I can't suggest how well this runs. But I'm still not fully confident in the power of the Intel GPU. It looks to me like the Texture Fillrate falls well short of the minimum required for UltraScope.

Because we do not have USB 3.0 drivers for Mac of course Pocket UltraScope will not run. I wasn't able to test under Windows in Bootcamp, so again I can't guarantee how well this might work.

These are simply casual observations, but from the looks of it, the MacBook Air and 13" Pro with Retina are not terribly well suited to UltraScope.
