640x480 video capture

PostMon Nov 05, 2012 11:35 pm

Is it possible to capture 640x480 video resolution with Intensity Pro card?
I know that his resolution is not supported according to technical specification but I'm wondering if capture output gets extra border to fill empty place to supported resolution?

I'm currently in purchases process so I need this information.

Thank you and best regards.

Hi Peter,

It's not possible to capture this kind of format with our capture devices. Only broadcast standard formats are supported across the range. If you were to input this format it would not be possible to capture it at all.

Are you saying that there is a device with HDMI connector giving that kind of resolution?
If you mean that you have a VGA (that is typical early day computer resolution) connector outputting that, then you can buy a VGA to HDMI upscaler for the job.

Hi,

unfortunately it looks like all Blackmagic capture devices can only handle TV type resolutions (SD/HD) which I guess is a subset of the EIA Standard.
The devices can not capture standard VESA timings that are used on "normal" computer screens.

I do not know if this is a hardware limitation or if could be resolved in firmware.
In theory it should be possible to capture 640x480@60Hz because the timing is less agressive then a 1080p60 timing.

It would be really cool if Blackmagic would release a new Firmware that would also allow the capturing of VESA computer formats.

What you could do is to get a (VGA to) HDMI Scaler to upscale the 640x480 signal to one that the Intensity understands....

@Esa:
HDMI is just a connector.... basically any video format can be transmitted over HDMI as long as it is within the bandwidth limitations of the HDMI specification. Set your PC graphics output to VGA and the signal will go to your monitor via HDMI no problem....

Hope that helps...

Yes, I am totally aware that HDMI can be used for any resolution. I was just wondering if there actually is any devices with HDMI output that would be default offer that ancient resolution.
- I sort of expected that the original output is a VGA connector and an VGA to HDMI adapter is in use...
