CPU/GPU

PostTue Nov 13, 2012 2:46 pm

Hello,

I'm planning to build server for video streaming. So how improtant is GPU/video card for encoding?
Do I save CPU, do I get better quality?

Well,

this highly depends on what exactly you plan to do.

There are several ways of building a streaming server.
What kind of streaming, what software, what platform (os), what codecs to encode to etc.

There are encoders which can take a big advantage of GPU processing and others which don't.

So please be a little more detailed in what you want or plan.

cheers

streaming server do not need GPU .. its using CPU mostly .. If streaming server doing transcoding (from one video format to another) , it can use GPU then ..

I need to stream with rtmp protocol.
I was planning to use fmle, but unfortunately it can only do 2 types of profiles: baseline or main. For sake of better quality and considering nobody is using Pentium 4 I want to use high profile. So any suggestion for software are welcome, for windows or linux.
Expected setup:
4u Xeon server with 5 pcie slots + 4 or 5 quad cards (depends do i need GPU)

Thank you guys.

So .. FMLE works good .. But with more cards, there is problem with autolaunch .. If U wanna use it 24/7 with autostarting streams , its not good .. I think , its best way for U use any free encoding+streaming software .. VLC or FFMPEG .. on windows its not problem .. on linux i dont know .. Im not sure , but i think , that both of them do not support GPU .. just CPU ..
