HDMI balanced audio embed Box?

PostSun Nov 25, 2012 2:42 pm

Another question regarding the recording of Audio though HDMI. Is there a converter Box that can embed balanced XLR Audio into an existing HDMI signal? Would be great to have the 2 Tracks of the camera recorded through HDMI but add 2 (or even 4) tracks of external Audio directly onto the Hyperdeck Shuttle. I saw an embedder for SDI Audio but i cannot find the same thing for HDMI... That would probably make the hyperdeck even an interesting solution for professional audio field recording...

Thanks,
T

U can use HDMI to SDI converter , whitch can embed analog audio to HDMI video and convert it to SDI .. Hyperdeck can record from SDI ..

well, yes that would be possible. i could also buy a generator, buy a pc and put a decklink card in it and carry it around on a push cart. sorry, just kidding.

the hdmi to SDI box is around 300€, the sdi embedder is around 400€, both will suck out extra current from the battery, would need tons of cable and add substantial weight to the rig ... so to make it short: thats not an option.

hey,

yeah i was checking out these boxes as well, there are plenty of it on the web. the thing is, they dont have balanced audio input (aka xlr), so i would have to connect a device for balanced -> unbalanced conversion... plus i would almost definitely loose the 2 tracks of audio from the camera as the embedder probably would embed on track 1 & 2... so also, that is not a solution. i wonder why blackmagic is not buildinng a converter / embedder box like that, for me it seems it would fit perfectly into their existing series of mini converters...

ciao,

They are not doing it with HDMI because they would cannibalize their market doing so.
The wisest option is to convert to SDI anyway, as everything will play in the pro/prosumer game after going the SDI way.

For your use, I dunno which setup you exactly have, but if you have for example a DSLR such as the Nikon D800 and an external recorder such as a Zoom H4n, and you want to embed the audio from this recorder, the best option is to use the mic input of your DSLR, feeding it with your external recorder output, possibly needing an attenuation cable ...

Well, i guess they would cannibalize the market of companies like SoundDevices or AJA. But as Blackmagic is not selling any audio stuff, why would they care?

Still i use my old (and sh**ty) HDV camera which has a clean HDMI out, waiting for the Panasonic GH3 to come out. I am not really the early adopter type when it comes to video gear, i'd rather wait for confirmation that the camera does what panasonic wants to make us believe ;).

The reason why i would want to have external audio also recorded on the Hyperdeck is to save me time in syncing external audio, in situation where it can be avoided. I mean it's kind of ridiculous that the device is always recording 16 channels of audio and (for the time being) you cannot change that, but there is no way to embed two extra tracks into the signal...

cheers,t.

the only device i found that would allow a comfortable multichannel audio mixing, pre-amps & hdmi embedding soultion is the MOTU Video I/O and besides the point that its 2000€, it is also not really a "portable" device at all...
