Setting up Hyperdeck Studio Pro 2 for 1080p@60

PostTue Nov 18, 2014 2:11 pm

We've just purchased a Hyperdeck Studio Pro 2 so that we can capture some footage coming out of a PC at 1080p@60fps in uncompressed, however, I can't seem to get it to record in this resolution/framerate. When we connect the PC via a HDMI, the Hyperdeck defaults to 1080i@60 and lets us record. When we force it to 1080p@60fps, it won't record (the button stops being red as soon as we let go of it). Is this a set-up issue? Or a problem with the SSDs? We're using Samsung Pro 850 SSDs - which we purchased believing they had the necessary write speeds. The PC is set to output at 1080p@60.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them, as we have an urgent need to capture footage at this quality and I've been getting nowhere with trying to figure out what we're doing wrong.

Thanks

1. What codec is the Hyperdeck set to? If its on "uncompressed", try changing it to ProRes LT to see if that works.

2. Is your computer set to YUV color or RGB color? And is it 60hz or 59hz. Does the picture show up correctly on the Hyperdeck's LCD screen (ie the colors are fine, and it's not jittery)

The Hyperdeck is set to uncompressed. When we tried changing it to ProRes LT, we could record ok. I called up BlackMagic support and they suggested that this pointed towards the SSD not being able to write fast enough, so we purchased another one from the supported list (Kingston HyperX 3K 256GB). That arrived this morning and we still have exactly the same problem.

The computer is set to RGB colour. When we originally got the Hyperdeck, the image was green (which I understand was the HDMI input expecting YUV?), but after updating the firmware for it, it went back to normal colours. It's set at 60HZ (but we tried 59HZ as well, with the same results). The screen from the PC shows up correctly in the LCD screen - no weird colours or jitter.

I should also confirm - if we bump the settings down to 1080p@30, we can record uncompressed without any problems.

It definitely sounds like SSD bandwidth is the issue. An uncompressed 1920x1080 60hz 24-bit color RGB signal is around 373 MB/s. While the real-world benchmarks I found for that Kingston drive are around 236 MB/s (http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/Kingston-HyperX-3K-240GB/Rating/1818)

Right - we only bought the Kingston SSD as it was on the supported list. Still though, the Samsung 850 Pro SSDs we had originally are quoted on that site as having an average of 469MB/s, so I would have thought they would have been capable of writing at that speed. As such, I'm still a little stumped.

BlackMagic support were going to go and run some tests on their machine at their end to see what they come up with - they explained that the recommended SSD list was pulled together before the update that added 1080p@60 support. There must be something that works with it!

Thanks for your input Chad - I'm coming up against a brick wall elsewhere, so any help is much appreciated!

You could always try switching the computer to YCbCr 4:2:2 color, that uses 30% less bandwidth than RGB color. Or you could record in ProRes HQ, which is still very very high quality. Is there a reason you are trying to use uncompressed?

We want to capture uncompressed footage so that we have the best quality to work with in editing.

BlackMagic support finally got back to me and confirmed that the kit does not support 1080p60 uncompressed, so it seems we're stuck with ProRes HQ anyway now!

what!?!? hey, this is really disappointing. marketing materials strongly suggest the ability to record 1080p uncompressed which is why I purchased this item. Is this the final answer, no possible firmware update, or better SDD in the future?

Is 1080p60 record supported for ProRes HQ?

BMD please respond.

The Hyper deck will record 1080P uncompressed, but not at 60fps, max is 30fps. This is a limit of the hardware SSD interface, which is not fast enough to do 1080p at 60fps. To record 60fps,uncompressed, you will need a Cfast recorder.

According to the support notes, the HD Studio Pro should support the higher P framerates. This was a firmware update back in October of this year.

This is not something I'm aware of currently being worked on but that's not to say it's something the devs aren't looking into.

The Firmware update from Oct. notes states: "Additional Hi P record and replay formats for HyperDeck Studio Pro: 1080 P 50, 1080 P 59.94 and 1080 P 60".

Hi P is ProRes HQ, no mention of uncompressed supporting 60P, dT rTe is too high for hardware bing used, this is why the USRA uses the faster CFast interface, which can support the higher data rates required for 60FPS raw/unco/pressed, from what I understand. Hyperdeck uses SATA controller, for SSDs, which is the limiting factor here. CFast uses the newer PCI Express interface, which can processor faster data rates than SATA.

We could be able to get 1080 50/60P in ProRes on the Shuttle, which is why I have not sold mine yet, waiting for the upgrade -- maybe someday...

I can still confirm this issue on the hyperdeck studio pro2 , I also have two studio 12G, none of those units have this problem. uncompressed 1080P60 works like a charm. all drives are kingston hyperx savage
