Cable Spec for 15m Length of SDI ?

PostThu Jan 29, 2015 11:52 am

Hi,

Will any 75ohm SDI cable be OK for a 15 metre HD SDI run or do I need to get something with a certain rating? There are some Kramer cables available from Keene Electronics for £16 with an 18awg solid copper conductor and foam dielectric, would these be OK?

Its only for two runs so its simpler to buy them made up rather than buy a reel and terminate them myself.

Thx for any help.

I would get a HD SDI spec. Cable for anything longer than 3 meters. The Kramer cable is ok for short runs, but it is problematic with solid conductor that can break when cables are used in field or temp. Situations and they get rolled and unrolled often. I would go with something like Canarie 75-ohm stranded center conductor cables. My they also come in colors for sorting out dual cable runs.
But, you should be able to use any good quality 75-ohm coax, with a multi-strand center conductor.

I use old RGBHV (5-wire BNC) cables at that length all the time, though I wouldn't trust them for longer than that.

I think 75 ohm is fine. We just have a bin of regular old BNC cables we used for composite and SD stuff, and we use them in 50-100ft runs all the time with our cameras (HD SDI) to a Ki Pro recorder. We use the same BNC for the HDMI to SDI converters from black magic.

The gold standard for HD-SDI cable seems to be RG6 with Belden 1694A being the most frequently recommended. However for a 15 m run you could probably get by fine with RG59 75 ohm cable. RG6 is 18 ga solid copper so you should be good .
Now you tell me!
