HyperDeck Shuttle 2 capturing from a DVI output

PostThu Dec 06, 2012 2:44 am

I'm a gastroenterologist physician trying to capture HD videos from latest Pentax endoscope equipment. The videoprocessor output is a regular female DVI transmitting on 1080p, so I bought a DVI to HDMI cable to do the job. It seems that HyperDeck Shuttle 2 doesn't recognize the video signal, but an excellent imaging its obtained when the connection is made to a 1080p regular monitor with the same cable adaptor. Is there any way to capture HD videos on Shuttle 2 from a DVI signal? Do I need another kind of adaptor to do the job?

Hmm, not sure about this, but it could be that your device stubbornly outputs 1080p with RGB colourspace.
DVI is RGB by its nature, but since it supports EDID handshake, normally target and source can negotiate a change to YUV when necessary.

HyperDeck Shuttle 2 expects broadcast standard 1080p video in and that is YUV with 4:2:2 colour profile. ( RGB is 4:4:4 )

It could be that your endoscope can not provide RGB to YUV conversion and you might need some kind of active box in between. Maybe something like this:

Or maybe the Black Magic DVI Extender would help (converts DVI to SDI)?

Note: I don't have one... so don't trust anything I say.

That is a possible solution as well, but I assumed that there is no way to adjust the output in normal manner. This is why I suggested an external HDMI in/out "box" for RGB->YUV conversion.

DVI Extender presents itself to a computer as display adapter and can be used to clone or extend desktop.
If that endoscopy camera is PC based, DVI Extender might do the trick for you in 'clone desktop' -mode.

Typically if you are inputting RGB, you would more than likely see a green-looking image on capture. I can't find any specifics on what the endoscope is outputting so I can't be sure, but I suspect it's more likely the output is one not supported by the HyperDeck. Perhaps it is a 1080p50/60 signal, rather than 1080p25/30. If you can find the specifications it may help us understand the problem better. It's quite possible that some kind of active converter would work better, but without knowing what the device is outputting it's hard to say for sure.

Hi Esa,
Does it convert Colorspaces?
In our situation we definitely have issue with colorspace - our HDMI source shows as greenish on the Hyperdeck, which is a sign that source did not negotiate YUV colorspace, but RGB.
Or BM "Broadcast Converter" is the only option - in specs it shows HDMI RGB and YUV colorspaces as supported?

With greenish result you clearly have colorspace related issue.

It is interesting that the Gefen product manual does not mention colorspace conversion, but it apparently has to provide it since manual says that DVI-D sources are also supported!

BM Broadcast Converter looks a bit overkill for this purpose only, but is otherwise an excellent product!

Hi Esa,

I've got Gefen Toolbox HDMI Scaler...
It does not convert colour space... Picture is still green...
It does show in information menu that source is HDMI RGB when connected to our source, and HDMI YUV 4:2:2 when connected to the output of the HyperDeck. But I can't confirm what is negotiated on the output of the Toolbox and input of the HyperDeck. How does signal negotiation works in HDMI? I meant does HyperDeck properly announces source that it is supporting only HDMI YUV?

Ouch! I hope you were offered the chance of testing the product before making final purchase decision?
Based on your tests I would say that colorspace conversion feature is not there - at least not yet!
I do not know if it can be fixed by firmware upgrade or not, but not having this feature limits the usability of that product.
