ATEM 1 & 2 GPI/TALLY INTERFACE BOX

PostSat Dec 29, 2012 6:01 pm

FYI

about the ATEM 1 & 2 with a GPI/TALLY INTERFACE BOX.

This is what I received from Blackmagic.

The GPI Tally Interface does not allow you to configure which tally connectors correspond to a specific input. For the ATEM 1 M/E, inputs 1-4 are for the HDMI inputs and 5-8 are for the SDI inputs, and this corresponds to the tally connectors on the GPI Tally Interface. If you like, we can log this as a feature request so that our engineering team can look into possibly adding the ability to configure the connections accordingly.

When ordering a Tally system keep this in mind.

Thank you Ted, but I don't know the problem.

As written by BMD: The tally box' physically outputs corresponds with ATEMs physically inputs... Why should the tally for phsically input X be signalled on physically output Y (when X<>Y) ?

By the way: Take a look to Kasper Skaarhols website. There you find all to develop your own tally controller using a Arduiono microcontroller.

It is my understanding that the ATEM 1 & 2 you can only use an HDMI on cameras 1 to 4 and SDI on 5 to 8 inputs.

I build tally systems for many of the switcher systems available (Blackmagic Tricaster Sony Panasonic, etc)

I don't have an ATEM 1 or 2 but I make a controller for the Blackmagic GPI/TALLY Interface box.

I had 2 request to change from Output 5 from the GPI/TALLY BOX to pin 1 on my controller. They said they didn't have an HDMI camera.

???

Let me know any further information you can supply.

I did make an adapter cable for them.

Works great, their happy.

I just don't know why Blackmagic built there switcher that way .

Equating the switcher's physical video inputs with the tally outputs is actually very common, and is probably the most intuitive approach for most users. In the context of an ATEM switcher, it also guarantees that even if the user changes the order of inputs on the control panel, the tally remains definitely associated with the input -- so users can customize their panel without messing up the tally system.

My question is, why on an ATEM only HDMI camera inputs on 1 to 4 and SDI input on 5 to 8 ???

It limits you to a 4 camera input if you have an SDI only.

The ATEM 1 and the ATEM TVS have eight physical inputs: 1-4 are HDMI and 5-8 are SDI. The tally mapping reflects this -- that is, for each physical input there's a unique tally relay assigned. You aren't missing any potential tally functionality. Just pick the relays that correspond with whatever physical inputs you are using.

The ATEM 2 has 16 physical inputs, all SDI if I remember correctly; you can map two GPI & Tally interface boxes to activate on inputs 1-8 (for the first box) and 9-16 (for the second box).

I don't see how this creates a limitation, since there is always a tally relay available for each physical input.

On the ATEM 1 you can not run an SDI on input 1 to 4, Only HDMI correct.

Yes, that's true so far as it goes. If you need more than the four SDI inputs (#5-#8), you can use Blackmagic SDI to HDMI converters to run SDI feeds into inputs #1-#4 -- so it's no big deal to get up to eight SDI inputs on either the TVS or 1M/E versions. (Or I suppose you could do the opposite, and use HDMI to SDI converters and send up to eight HDMI feeds to the switcher.) Either way, there will be a tally for every one of the eight physical inputs, regardless of format.
