Decklink Mini Recorder and HDCP

PostThu Feb 16, 2017 9:25 pm

I've posted a couple topics on this, but they kept deleting my accounts for not using my real name, so here it goes again.

My Mini Recorder both is recognized by the computer and recognizes an HDMI input, but only shows a black screen. Last time I posted, I was hinted to a possible problem with HDCP. I did a bit of research and found out that Blackmagic's products do not strip the HDCP protection. I that is indeed true, how can I still use this capture card with a HDMI input, if all devices nowadays are HDCP compliant? I didn't really want to have to buy stripping-splitter just because of this.

Thanks in advance.

HDCP in itself isn't the issue as you can capture through HDMI from any device that uses HDMI with HDCP as long as the content itself isn't copy protected. So if you are trying to capture from a commercial Blu-ray or TV set-top box then BM devices won't capture direct as the content contains a copy protection flag. There are ways round this by using certain HDMI splitters

Also depending on what the source is it may not be supported by the Mini Recorder. A lot of cameras etc will output 1080p 50/60 which the standard Mini recorder doesn't support

What are you trying to capture from and how long is your HDMI cable as the length of cable can also affect capture

Thanks for the reply, Adam.

I am trying to capture from a digital camera, which is outputing at 1080p30. In the Video Utility (can't quite remember the name) software, whenever I plug in the camera, it detects it, but for some strange reason, shows that the format is in 1080i59.94, and I can't figure out why or how to change it...

As for the cable... Not sure, don't have it with me, but it has between 1.5m and 2m, if it's any help.

Are you sure the camera is actually outputting 1080p30? Hook, the camera's HDMI out to a TV monitor and see what the monitor shows as the camera's output. A lot of older HD cameras when set to 1080p30 would use a pull down (2/2 3/2) to convert the signal,to 1080i59.94, as HDMI 1.x standard could not support a progressive signal above 7210p60, along with most monitors a few years back.

None of the TVs tells the framerate of the input, only the resolution. I can't remember if I tried setting the camera to 720p and connecting to the capture card, although I feel as if that would've crossed my mind already.

As for the cable length, the one I'm trying it with is 10m long (my memory was a bit off lol).

10M is probably to long for a BM device. HDMI isn't really designed to go much above 5M, anything longer can degrade the signal so you could try a shorter cable

Will try a shorter cable and will post the result here. Cheers!

Hopefully someone sees this.

So I was able to try it with a 1.5m HDMI cable and a Mini-HDMI to HDMI adapter (didn't want to waste 30€ in a Mini-HDMI to HDMI cable just for the sake of trying), and still nothing. Even tried lowering it to 720p60, but the video utility still showed 1080i59.94...

Canon 70D. Not a video camera, I know, but it's just for testing purposes.

Well a quick google says that the 70D supports "Video Out Terminal

HDMI Type C (Switches automatically to suit the resolution)

Video output: 1080/60i, 1080/50i, 480/60p, 576/50p"
https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/14 ... esolution/

So it seems you are not able to set the output resolution on this camera.. And this is why we never use DSLR's amongst other problems like overheating sensors, 29 minute issue.. (i think the 70D does not have that) Windowed output...

It will automatically get the highest available resolution in the EDID table of the Mini Recorder.

1080i60 or in broadcast terms 59.94 ;)

Using a 10 meter hdmi cable on a device that has a mini HDMI is NOT DONE!! These devices have HDMI output drivers ment for quick show on a TV (Short hdmi lead) or external monitor on your camera (Also short hdmi lead)..
Why it does work on a TV and not on the Decklink is probabbly a mismatch between EDID information..

I'm not using the 10m cable this time. Anyways, I'm gonna just give up on trying with the DSLR. Gonna try to test it with a proper camcorder.

I'm back. Unfortunately. Got a camcorder, but for some reason, I'm still not getting anything. Desktop Video 10.8 shows the input as 1080p25 (even though I got it as 1080p50 in the camera definitions), but no image on Media Express. Desktop Video 10.3 doesn't even recognize any source. I have no clue where to go from here, it's been months trying to get this set up.

Connect the camera to a TV. Does it say 1080P50 if you pull the source info??

Is there any other way to check? None of the monitors/TVs I've tried on don't show the framerate.

EDIT
Well, the definitions I choose in the camera are the ones that show in Desktop Video, so I don't think there's an issue there. xSplit still shows a black screen though...

EDIT #2
There's audio coming from the camera... Just not the video.
