Format SD card in camera vs with card reader and computer

I'm using a Blackmagic camera (BMPCC2) for the first time.
I was watching a Lynda.com tutorial for Blackmagic cameras and I'm pretty sure the instructor there said that you should format your SD cards with a computer and not in the camera. Either that, or he said it's not possible to format cards in the camera. He also might have been talking specifically about the BMPCC.
It might be a dated video tutorial and possibly it relates to an older version of the camera.
Anyhow, I was reading the official manual and there it actually says that it is recommended to format the SD card in the camera, rather than with a computer.
Can someone please shed some light as to what is the preferred method, if it matters at all?
