Video Assist 4K speakers

On our last shoot we encountered an issue with the VA 4K. We fed the VA through SDI, only using it as a monitor (not recorder). On playback from the camera, there was audio coming from the camera, but not from the VA speakers. We had to plugin an external speaker into the headphone jack of the VA or use headphones (so the audio was definitely carried over through SDI). We tried recording on the VA and playing back directly from it, and the audio played back just fine through the speakers.

So my question is -- is this intended behavior? No speaker audio when sound is coming from the cameras recording?

Yes that is pretty normal behaviour.. Altrough it would be nice if you could mute or set volume for recording and for playback seperately..

Imaging that you are recording with the VA on the camera.. And the speaker would sound all the time.. This would get into the recording again if you are close enough to the microphones.. ;) That is why on headphones you can hear it.. But not on the speaker..

I have the opposite problem, when recording from my nikon d850 the video assistant IS very loud and causing a huge feedback screwing the whole recording. is there some option to deactivate? is my new video assistant 12g with problems from factory?
