SDI and Cat6 mix - Advice.

PostSat Nov 04, 2017 2:38 pm

Hi all,

Newbie here - and enjoying reading the forum so far.

I am looking for the best and cost effective way in distribution for linking from a control area for a conference etc.

I am using a simple Roland V1-HD and want to come out of that and into my 2 x projectors, 1 x comfort monitor and link into 4 x relay screens (46" TVs) around the room.

I have looked at both HDbaseT and SDI.

I have been recommended to go fully Cat6, but linking TVs around the room, to get a link through from 1 x TV to another seems very expensive on Cat6 - so I have looked at the Black Magic Micro Convertor which I can stick one on each TV and use SDI and probably do Cat 6 to get to my projectors?

Is is ok to run it like this:

Roland V1-HD HDMI - HDbaseT out, to HDbastT in at projector to a HDMI splitter and feed 2 x projectors from that - and from the HDMI splitter feed into BMD Micro convertor and link all TVs up from that?

Also is there a delay in running a mix of Cat6 and SDI?
or best to keep it all in one way?...i keep getting told to stick with Cat6 as SDI is now an old format?

Thanks for any advice all!!!

Also I have a job coming up where I might need to link 8 TV screens together, and the BlackMagic micro convertors look perfect for this?...but I cant have any lag / lip sync issues.

SDI may be old, but so is the mighty wheel. No issues with DRM, carries HD video over 100m on one cable, very sturdy connector, massive amount of gear available for it.

Hi Jack,

Thank you.

For cable in the UK, any recommendations?

The above says it will do 100m BUT it says analogue and not digital ?

Can't go wrong with Belden 1694A, I imagine that's available in the UK.

Yes they do that too.

I will get them to make some up with those.

so up to 100m with that should be fine.

Thanks again, appreciate your help.
