Connecting Nikon D850 to UltraStudio Mini Recorder

PostTue Mar 06, 2018 4:13 am

I am trying to connect a Nikon D850 to an UltraStudio Mini Recorder in order to use the D850 as a webcam for live broadcasts using OBS. I am unable to get a video signal to the computer. When troubleshooting, I am able to get video from the camera to three different monitors using the same cables, so I know the D850 is sending a good signal through its HDMI port. Additionally, I am able to get the HDMI signal from other sources (an older Canon camcorder and the HDMI port of a laptop PC) into my computer through the Mini Recorder, so I know the Mini Recorder is good. The D850 senses there is a connection to the HDMI port when it is connected to the Mini Recorder but I the Mini Recorder doesn't sense a connection from the camera.

Are there any settings on the camera and/or Mini Recorder I can adjust or is the D850 just not compatible with the Mini Recorder for some reason?

It would seem to appear that the output settings on the camera are not ones supported by the Mini Recorder. You can see the full listing of those standards here. You'll need to change the output settings in the camera to one of those formats in order for the signal to be detected by the device.

Hi, I have exactly the same problem. it works with my gopro and my sony a6000 (but had nothing to adjust) but my nikon d850 is not recognized no matter what settings are selected.
I assume that it has nothing to do with the nikon software because it is only a hdmi signal, but as I said it is not recognized no matter what is set.
Can you give us more detailed information? have you already tried to get a picture with the nikon d850?

please more detailed information, thank you

I gave up and returned the Mini Recorder (bought through Amazon). I got the AVerMedia Extreme Cap (BU110) and it worked perfectly with no issues.

I'm having the exact same problem. Need a quick solution for an event on Monday. I've tried every output setting on the Nikon for video and HDMI, and the device is not recognized. Considering returning it if we can't get some specific advice.

May not be much help but I had a similar problem with a D800. It was a while ago so my recall is a bit sketchy but I think I had to change the setting in the Blackmagic software to something like 1080i. It was counter intuitive I remember that much.
God luck with it.

I had the same problem I solved with Blackmagic Micro Converter - HDMI to SDI. Connect the HDMI output of the Nikon 850 to the HDMI input of the converter and the SDI output of the converter to the SDI input of ultrastudio minirecorder. set minirecorder for SDI input. sets the HDMI output of D850 to 1080i. It also works with lower resolutions. Market price 60 $

Hi, I am also trying to connect my D850 to the UltraStudio Mini Recorder. Has anyone found a solution that does not involve purchasing another converter? (like the HDMI to SDI converter). I would rather have just one adapter between the camera and the computer. I am trying to use the camera as an alternative to using the Mac HD FaceTime camera for Skype calls and Zoom meetings.
Hopefully, I hear about a solution before I return the device.

Hi... I too own a nikon d850 and of course with same issue with blackmagic ultrastudio mini recorder and now looking back I should of done a little more research before i got this.. anyway I can't change the past. Lets hope that Blackmagic support will look at all of these support calls and really commit to finding a fix to this major problem and hopefully have this resolved sooner than later..
Spending over $400 including connecting cables to have nothing for it is somewhat deflating. And further insulting, this was purchased for a paying job that left me red faced and humiliated.
Looking forward hearing from Blackmagic support with a fix or allowing me to return the incompatible device.

Cheers

What are the HDMI output settings used on the D850?

HDMI output resolution, Auto or fixed? Perhaps the Mini Recorder is unable to negotiate with the D850?
Which frame rate set?
HDMI output display 100%?
Set screen timer under Custom c4 (Monitor off delay) to Live view

The D850 frame rates for 1080:
60p, 50p, 30p, 25p, 24p

Actually are:
59,94, 50, 29,97, 25 respective 23,976
Grew up with a Nikon FM
Resolve & Fusion Studio 18.6
MBP M1 16GB/1TB
MM M1 16GB/512GB TB4 1TB & 2TB
MM i7 16GB/1TB & PowerColor Vega 56 8GB

I think this may be the Nikon camera issue, unless you use 25/50 or (30) 29.97 and (60) 59.94, with the Mini Recorder set to match (25/50:or 29.97/59.94) should work. However, trying to use 24fps is not going to work, as the Mini Recorder will not recognize 23.976 as a legal frame rate or 30/60 FPS from the Nikon.

Ultrastudio Mini Recorder supported HD Video Standards

720p50, 720p59.94, 720p60
1080p23.98, 1080p24, 1080p25, 1080p29.97, 1080p30
1080PsF23.98, 1080PsF24, 1080PsF25, 1080PsF29.97, 1080PsF30
1080i50, 1080i59.94, 1080i60

Looking online it looks like the D850 supports the following via HDMI

HDMI video HD 1080 24p, 25p, 30p, 50p, 60p
HDMI video HD 720 50p, 60p

I Don't have a D850 to test with, but my D810 and other Nikon cameras (D750/D7100) work fine with the Ultrastudo Mini Recorder at 25p as I am in the UK.

Yes, 25/50 FPS work fine. The issue is Nikon Cameras do not output an actual 24, 30, or 60 FPS,
But actually output:
The D850 frame rates for 1080:
60p, 50p, 30p, 25p, 24p

Actually are:
59.94, 50, 29.97, 25 respective 23.976

My Z6 is the same, so you need to use 29.97 and 59.94, when the camera is set to 30/60, and trying to use 24fps is not going to work.
