How do I get 4K out of the Intensity Pro 4K?

PostSat May 05, 2018 12:56 am

I installed an Intensity Pro 4K to solve an EDID problem with a new 4K projector we installed.

The problem is that I can't get a 4K signal to go out the HDMI port. I have to limit it to UHD and then I get a 3.8K signal to the 4K projector.

I was getting full 4K out of the nVidia Titan X, but decided to put in the Intensity Pro 4K to prevent the Windows desktop from shuffling to another display when the projector is powered up. It solves that problem, as now I can turn on/off the projector and Windows desktop doesn't blink. However, I get a black screen when I show 4K content. It only works with UHD content, not 4K. How do I get 4K out of it?

Further testing reveals that if I connect my Sony FS7 to the input of the card and set its HDMI out to 4K, I get the full 17:9 4K signal on my 4K production monitor. But if I output from my NLE a 4K timeline, I get a black screen. If I play a 1080P timeline, I get a 16:9 image, pillarboxed on my display.

So the Intensity Pro 4K WILL pass a 4K signal from input to output--but it won't accept a 4K signal from the NLE. This sounds like a driver issue.

You may check the Tech Spec or User Manual of your monitior to confirm what frequency(H/V) supported when 4K HDMI connetted via a video card. Some monitor only support up to UHD @30Hz.

Our projector supports DCI 4K at 60P. But the Intensity Pro seems to be limited to 3.8K.

The intensity pro is from the budget range of cards and will only go up to UHD 30P. If you 4K DCI you need a Decklink Mini Recorder 4K or Decklink 4K Extreme. ;) And only up to 25P on sdi or 24P on hdmi.

4K DCI Video Standards

4K DCI 23.98p, 4K DCI 24p, 4K DCI 25p*
*SDI only.

I'm a bit confused... 4K DCI only out of the SDI?

The card spec lists:
HDMI Video Outputs
HDMI type A connector with support for 2160p60.

If it's HDMI 2.0b, it should support 4K 60P.

The Decklink Mini Recorder 4K is only an input capture card--no video out. But it might be an alternative to the Intensity Pro 4K that isn't working in my new Asus Z390-A based system.

If there were a product that had the functions of the Intensity Pro 4K but actually supported DCI 4K at 60P out the HDMI connector, I'd buy it. Unfortunately specs are ambiguous, such as "2160P" not being stated as to what horizontal resolution is supported.

As said before. Intensity is the Budget serie capture cards and do not include all features.!! For DCI you really need a Decklink serie card!
2160P60 = UHD. When they say 4K DCI then it is real 4K. ;)
A decklink mini recorder will not help you with outputing 4K DCI.. it is a recorder only.

The following cards are able to output 4K DCI over HDMI:
Decklink mini monitor 4K
Decklink Studio 4K
Decklink 4K Extreme 12G

4K Video Standards
4K DCI 23.98p, 4K DCI 24p,
4K DCI 25p (25p over SDI only)

Looking at their specs:

Decklink Mini Monitor 4K = 2160P - UHD? It's HDMI 2.0a. Specs top out at 2160 @30P

Decklink Studio 4K = HDMI 1.4b (no 4K 60P there)

Decklink 4K Extreme 12G = 2160 at 60P, but 4K at only 25P and no statement as to the HDMI output

So it looks like none of the above can output 4K DCI over HDMI. It's not all that uncommon a format. Atomos Shogun Inferno, Sony PXW-FS7 and Sony's VPL VW765ES 4K projector all handle DCI 4K to 60P and can do so over HDMI.

I'm tasked with trying to use a GPU for a second output port. GPUs support 4K 60P.

All 3 card report the above quote>>
4K Video Standards
4K DCI 23.98p, 4K DCI 24p,
4K DCI 25p (25p over SDI only)

Which says it does Support 4K DCI. 23.98 and 24P on HDMI and SDI. 25P only on SDI.
Non of the cards will do 4K DCI on 60P.
Support of HDMI 2.0A does not say automatically that it supports all features of this HDMI 2.0a standard. ;)

Anyway i checked with the competitors.. And it seems that AJA is leading the race. So if you need 4K DCI 60P buy an AJA KONA 4 or 5 card and pay $1995 to $2995 dollars. ;)
BMD does not have a 4K DCI 60p card at this point of time.

Or just throw in an extra MSI GTX1060 for $220 and have 4K 60P out the HDMI port. ;)

My only reason for having a separate card is so my desktop and Wacom tablet active area settings don't get trashed every time I turn on the projector.

That can be easily fixed. Just add an Edid manager in the line of the projector that is always on. ;) Let it be active edid all the time. The pc thinks there is a monitor, while the projector is off. ;)

I've been down that route last May. Even invested in an Extron switcher for $500 that saves the EDID, but it didn't solve the problem and it introduced new problems, such as not being able to output 4K 60P to the projector.

Do you know of a product that actually WORKS without degrading the signal?
