Silent HD SDI recording

PostFri Sep 07, 2012 6:34 pm

I need a silent HD Video recording solution for a small greenscreen studio where I want to be able to maintain
sound studio levels of quiet (as any good microphone will pick up the fan and disk noise certainly from my Mac Pro and probably from most laptops, even those running on Solid State Disks [SSD's]).

I could go with a Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 and record uncompressed, but it just occurred to me that the hyperdeck may have internal cooling fans which need to activate when the unit is processing HD Video streams. Can anyone reassure me that it records silently?

I have been waiting to purchase a hyperdeck which encodes and records ProRes, but Blackmagic doesn't yet offer it. When they do, I'll be able to record silently, and take my camera into the field with decent recording times available. That'll be nice.

I'm also curious about the new Ultrastudio option, but would like to confirm that it wouldn't work either. I don't believe you could simply connect an external thunderbolt drive and record HD SDI silently. It appears to be hardware designed to be driven by a laptop. And a laptop either encoding or passing through an HD stream to an external (thunderbolt) drive would get hot, and turn on it's fans, I believe.

If there's a silent option about which I'm unaware, or if any of the above assumptions are wrong, could someone explain? Many thanks.

The Hyperdeck studio I have is silent. No fan so far as I can tell. No idea on the Shuttle.

Thanks Liam. No official response means that I don't think there'd be an ultrastudio solution either.

Be nice to confirm the Hyperdeck Shuttle was silent too.

There are no fans in my Hyperdeck Studio. There is no space for any kind of fan in the Shuttle. And since there are no vents visible in the photos of the Hyperdeck Studio Pro, either, it seems quite safe to predict that there are no fans in that product, either. Modern technology allows BMD to design high-performance devices with low-power semiconductors which don't need forced cooling. This is not your grandfather's video equipment.

Hyperdeck Studio and shuttle have no fans. Ultrastudio Express does have a fan.

As I thought. Back to waiting for the ProRes Hyperdeck Shuttle then.

But the Hypderdeck Studio doesn't have a fan either?

Umm... the one I haven't doesn't.

EDIT: Oh... I see what you mean. Your question was directed to the original poster as to why the silent Hyperdeck Studio was not sufficient. I think that's because he wants the Shuttle version - but only when that has support for prores?

Yes, that's right. It's a cost issue, but the portability of the shuttle will also be nice for field shooting.
