SSD docks

PostWed Aug 22, 2012 2:30 pm

Hello and thanks for starting the forum!
We have been using the Hyperdeck products since available in portable video 'flypack' setups. When it came to transferring content from the SSDs to the clients media we were using a HDD dock with USB3.0. These units failed and were returned multiple times. Even when they worked it seemed to be a chore. We have since found a cable adapter made specifically for SSDs that works extremely well. It is powered from the USB port since all it has to power is a SSD. Reports are that it will actually power a 2.5" HDD but it is not marketed for HDDs. Our specific product is the Diablotek EN4228S and it seems to be back-ordered everywhere currently. With the growing use of SSDs I've got to think this simple cable-style adapter will become more popular with more manufacturers.
Of course, we are looking forward to that nice Thunderbolt port expected on our new Pro models!!

Thanks you for the info.

Have you used it on mac with usb3 card?

I see it as concern when bm camera will ship.

A lot of material that needs to be moved.

We use these:

Connected to a Mac Pro with these cards:

We have also just extended out one the mac pro's internal sata ports to an esata port mounted to an empty pcie slot.

The dock also has firewire 400, 800, USB3 so we can pretty much always get data off of the drives in the field.

Been using these since the hyperdeck was released with out fail.

Hope this helps.

When we extended the internal port we had the same issues, our boot drives are ssd so the 20 seconds for the machine to reboot really wasn't a huge issue for us. The card from macsales works great with hot swapping as long as you remember to eject the drive before yanking it out of the dock.

Sorry I did not reply sooner...
I am in a Windows setting (using MacDrive to maintain the SSD's) so I can only comment first hand that the SSD adapter works well in that environment. I have sent drives with an adapter out to vendors using Macs and have gotten good feedback.
The HDD docks we tried, like the one in the earlier post, seemed to work to start and then stop working for some reason. We pass drives around, so USB3.0 was the best option to expect anyone to have, hopefully.
Still haven't seen the Diablotek unit surface in the US but I found one other unit by another manufacturer on the local shelf...hiding behind a bunch of USB2.0 models.
I try to obey Windows' rules about ejecting the SSD's but I have had to yank one out (bad SSD). There did not seem to be any bad effects, but then again I wasn't really hot-swapping anything.
