How to record ProRes at 120 fps?

PostSat Dec 22, 2018 4:20 pm

If using a ProRes codec setting, must the window mode be activated (to use less of the sensor) to allow recording at higher frame rates like 120 fps, say at 2K?

Is this the correct process?:
- Set WINDOW SENSOR in RECORD menu to ON
- Set OFF SPEED RECORDING: ON
- Set a frame rate for OFF SPEED FRAME RATE (e.g. 120 fps)
- Set a PROJECT FRAME RATE (e.g. 24 fps)

Also, The manual mentions that windowed mode will introduce a crop factor. Does this mean what you see in the viewfinder will not be what is recorded? i.e. that it will be cropped at the edges? Id this is so, is there any guide box that can be shown on the LCD to indicate where cropping will occur, or is this too dependent on the lens to make this a possible feature?

Sounds good. That should,do,the trick. Shooting 120fps is in the HD resolution window mode. Which means, the resolution will be 1929x1080 resolution, and you will be shooting in the center of the sensor. But the image on the screen and later played back on a TV will be full screen size. What the crop sensor mode means is, in order get a normal fileld of view (25mm on the Pocket in 4K/UHS full sensor size) in the HD window, you will need to use a 12-15mm lens.

Hello Denny,

Thanks for your reply.

So, if I understand you correctly, using the windowed mode will make the field of view less than at full sensor mode and thus you need a wider lens to capture more of the scene?

Is there a formula in choosing a wide angle lens related to the cropped sensor size for getting the normal, or a wider of field view? Or do you just have to experiment?

I use an application called pCAM, but it has not been Pocket 4K Camera. Not sure what the crop factor is, but Rick Lange commented on this a few months back. Do a search on the Cinematography forum, on Pocket 4K HD Window, and see what pops up.
