Solder your own video cable to DeckLink SDI Micro?

PostMon Apr 01, 2019 1:11 pm

I'm using a DeckLink SDI Micro and I would like to solder my own video cable to the board (for stability reasons and because I need a longer cable than the standard 6 inch cable). Is it possible to use one of the connectors/jumpers labelled J1 or J7 (having 6 contacts each) on the board? Since J1 is very close to the input/output/reference connectors (labelled J2, J3, J4) my guess is that the six connectors represent 3 signal/ground pairs (for input/output/reference) maybe? However, I could not find any information about the connector assignment in the manual anywhere. Is it possible to solder your own cable to the board and if so, how does it have to be connected?

Thanks a lot in advance for any help,
Hendrik

The impendance of a jumper connector is not even near what is needed for video. So don't count on it that they have put a 3G sdi on those connectors..

Best practice is to crimp your own cable. (Yes with the tiny freaking connector. ) Or let a company specialised in kind of cabling do that. ;)

You might try to solder a cable yourself by cutting the connector off and extend it to a new connector. But the loss alone at the point where you soldered it might result, depending on your soldering skills, in no signal, only use-able for SD and 720, to maybe 1,5G but 3G with a cut and soldered cable is often not done..

Are these the miniBNC or the HD-BNC (HD means high density), or the mini DIN connectors (I don't own one). Either way cables are cheap an you can buy just about any flavor to any other flavor.

[edit]

Is this the M.2 card? If so, those are standardized connectors as well, but I'd want someone from Black Magic to say which style of connector they used. If it is the same as a lot of companies use for antenna cables, then there are multiple adapter cables available up to about 18 inches long.

If it is the M.2 card, how well is it working? I probably should have bought that instead of the Intensity Shuttle USB device that I just bought. The M.2 card offers a few more frame rates that the Shuttle doesn't provide.
