BMPCC4K Peculiar SSD behavior

PostTue May 14, 2024 11:36 am

Used my BMPCC4K on a shoot yesterday and noticed this this strange occurrence that had never occurred before. When I connected my SSD to my computer to transfer files to Resolve, I discovered all of the files on the SSD had duplicated themselves into smaller, unreadable files. The ProRes, C4K clips were all there but every clip cloned itself into a much smaller "ghost" clip, file size being no more than 4 Kb. I discovered this after I installed the very latest firmware. I also used the camera all night on AC power. Any clue as to whether this is normal? It never happened before.

If the file names start with a dot, then this a OSX HFS file system thing - just sidecar files.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Thank you, but, why all of a sudden is it doing this now and never before?

Did you install the 8.6 firmware?

I did install the new firmware! As a matter of fact, since installing the new firmware, I also noticed that when I tap the SSD icon, instead of the "format" menus appearing first, I get the clips playback menu first and have to tap the formak SSD menu to get to it! Intentional by BMD I guess, huh?

May I just delete these ghost files or just transfer the actual recorded files only onto my editing hard drive? It's kind of a small pain to have to do an extra step.

Those files are called resource fork / AppleDouble formats. Under MacOS those files are invisible to the user. They contain some system metadata and probably in the case of the Blackmagic camera OS a small thumbnail so the camera doesn't need to create new thumbnails every time the playback mode is accessed. So their purpose is speeding up loading times.

Sources to read:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resource_fork
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppleSing ... le_formats

You can ignore those resource files completely when transferring your footage.

There is a free tool to get rid of the files:
https://markshroyer.com/2010/10/nosx/

Seems to still work on Win10/11.

Thanks for taking the time to explain. So, it's a MAC thing, eh? I'm a PC guy. I'll just cut and paste the Prores clips and call it good.

Not necessarily a Mac thing in this case as those files are created by the Blackmagic Camera OS.
But kinda.

So yeah, just ignore them :-)

I believe they are there to support new in-camera features, like Clip Deletion.

I hate them myself, and will probably not update to any firmware that includes them.

I want ONE file per clip on my media, and nothing else. (Hidden or otherwise.)
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Seems you never shoot with avchd cam or many others pro cam that build an entire database of data’s around video file.
It’s hidden file, smaller, you never see it if you not change your Os preference. And I think you didn’t or you saw that many times ago.

If you change this Os preference you find tons of hidden file near your windows and macOS file. You can discover near psd files, near premiere, after, and more.
If you work in 3d environment the same.
The world is full of hidden files everywhere.
