Ursa Mini Shoulder Rig For Guys Over 6 Feet??

PostThu Apr 13, 2017 12:23 am

I just purchased the BM Ursa Mini Shoulder Rig Kit and boy am I disappointed.

I can't believe how small and uncomfortable this thing is. I purchased it after watching a Tom Antos video but didn't take into consideration that he is about 5"4.

I am 6"4 and need a better solution. Once I put the camera on my shoulder my face is at already in front of the camera. Although I have the EVF I couldnt open the LCD if I wanted to. And the hand grip extension is way to short. I could not imagine using it like this for even 5 minutes.

Has anyone in my situation (6'4 or taller) found a better solution or a way to modify this thing? Is there a longer extension available? I am so disappointed.

Thanks ....

Wooden Camera and Zacuto make alternative shoulder eigsmthat work with the Mini. Also. You can get an extended arm for the grip (Wooden Camera) in several lengths. The LCD is not going to be useable by anyone when shooting shoulder mounted, so the BM EVF is designed to be used instead of the LCD, which is a better choice for shoulder mounted work,

I'm 6'7" and have the same issues. I struggled through exactly one shoot with this equipment before realizing it was not workable for people our size. I put together a rig from Red Rock Micro which is much better. I have their older shoulder pad which is only so-so. Their current one seems much better, and I would get it if I did much shooting this way.

You will need to get the EVF, no getting around this. It is quite adjustable an I am able to get it into just the right place for my eye.

Every human is different.

I have what I call a fitting before each shoot. When having a fitting I'm getting the camera dressed in the different modes I'll be using and I'm checking how it feels to operate in different configurations.

I spent a rediculous amount of money on a custom wooden handgrip that I use. (3k) Because comfort and customisation is important to me.

I bought the wooden camera EVF mod kits because they give me a lot more flexibility in positioning the EVF where I need it for comfort.

My assistant made for me my own custom shoulder pad because the factory one, or for that matter, any after market ones didn't do what I wanted.

It's like buying a suit. You get the best results from customising and making it fit what you need.

If the EVF is your main issue then the Wooden camera mod is great.

Now my BMVF is over a year old, I should look into the Wooden Camera mod. Often using BMD's Viewfinder forces an awkward posture (or is inaccessible) when shooting on the tripod. Perhaps the Bright Tangerine Titan Arm should figure in there as well given how well it holds while allowing quick adjustments.

Rick, you should also look at the Wooden Camera Ursa Mini EVF mount, it adds a third axis of movement.
I Use this EVF support, which is adjustable, with friction movements that can be adjusted: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/contro ... av-Search=

I'm 6"8 and I must admit I find it a littl cosy - I purchased the lanparte extendable arm though and I have to say that made a huge difference - as others have said though there is no way you want to be trying to use the LCD from your shoulder - the evf is great and I would highly recommend -

At this height however the main problem is off the shoulder the camera is waaaay to high for most shots, I end up tucking it under my arm to get at subjects eye level a lot of the time!!

Thanks for the alternatives, Denny. The BT Titan arm is quite strong, but as long as the others hold the BMVF, they're worth looking at.
