A 50 to cut in with my Sigma 18-35

PostSun Oct 22, 2017 2:04 am

Hi all,

I'm looking for a good 50mm lens for my Micro camera to go with my Sigma 18-35 which I've been using with both the BMPCC Speedbooster as well as a dumb adapter. I was thinking of the Samyang 85mm which, on the Speedbooster, should give roughly a 50mm view if my maths is correct plus then I've got an 85mm as well which is nice.

However, I've seen a few people say that using this with a Speedbooster makes it unbearably soft. The other thing is that there have been a few videos where purple fringing is quite apparent and yet other videos I've seen don't have it at all so I'm not sure whether it's that big of an issue.

What is your budget limit for the 50mm lens?

Sigma's 50-100 lens work quite nicely for this, even though it breathes more than I'd like.

The 50mm Sigma Art lens would be a close match IQ wise, I would think. With the SB, this gives you a 29mm FOV, which is perfect for head and shoulder shots.

I would second Rakesh's suggestion.
With a Metabones speedbooster you would be able to get 50mm.

http://www.metabones.com/products/detai ... -BMPCC-BM1

"Nikon-G/F to Micro-4/3 mount Speed BoosterTM adapters designed exclusively for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera (BMPCC). Note that this new 0.58x Speed Boosters will only attach to BMPCC equipped with a Micro-4/3 mount. They cannot be attached to standard Micro 4/3 cameras.
The new 0.58x Speed Booster reduces the crop factor of the BMPCC from 2.88x to 1.75x, and produces the largest aperture optics currently available, with a maximum output aperture of f/0.74. For example, a 50mm f/1.2 now becomes a 29mm f/0.74 (i.e, by using 50mm lens, the actual focal length in BMPCC is 29mm x 3.02 = 87.58mm), and the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 becomes the world’s fastest zoom lens at 10.5-20.3mm f/1.0 with stunningly sharp performance. (i.e, by using 18-35mm lens, the actual focal length in BMPCC is from (10.5mm x 3.02 = 31.71mm) to (20.3mm x 3.02 = 61.31mm). "

So using this formula the Sigma 50-100mm will give you 29-58mm.

Think of the bonus telephoto when not using the speedbooster.

Ooh, lots of responses. Thank you! Yes, ideally, the Sigma is 50-100 would be the best option but I've not got the cash for it right now. I did rather splurge on the 18-35 and Speedbooster knowing that would sort me out for almost all applications.

To answer Rick's question, I was hoping to get under $500 if that was possible.

Trying to stay within that budget, the Rokinon T1.5 Cine DS lens may be suitable. It produces a decent image.

This Sigma 16mm lens has just been announced for micro four thirds.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/ ... dc_dn.html

http://www.newsshooter.com/2017/10/24/s ... 1-4-dc-dn/

Newshooter shows that it will come in at "There is currently no indication of pricing, but for reference the 30mm F1.4 DC DN retails for $399US."

With the crop factor of 2.88 it will get you close to 50mm.

Patrick is considering an 85mm lens so that’s a lot longer (smaller angle of view) than a 16mm would provide. He needs to clarify what he wants as we are going in two different and incompatible directions with our recommendations.

Edit
I see when he suggested 85mm he meant to mount that on the BMPCC Speed Booster so my recommendation should be changed to the 50mm Rokinon Cine DS in MFT Mount.
