Is My Sensor Bad?

PostMon Dec 18, 2017 6:28 am

Hey Guys,

Just purchased my first URSA Mini 4.6K used, and I'm looking at the shadows, and they are just awful. Now I'm not saying they are awful when I shoot 1600 ISO inside during the night time. Awful is I'm outside on an extremely bright day without a cloud in the sky shooting at 400 ISO, 180 degree shutter, 1.8 Aperture (ND filter) , 2K 120fps PRORES 444 awful. Not only is there noise, but there are strange lines in these noisy images. I will upload a JPEG below. I have seen a few posts with people saying it is my software or output settings, which could be possible, because depending on where I open the image at, the lines disappear (However the awful noise is still there) . I see these "lines" and "poor noise" on my monitor when I'm shooting. So I'm curious to fix the problem here. Could it be my sensor? Could it be a setting? Yes, my WB was way off on the shot, I'm sorry. Thanks so much!

Austin

I see no excessive noise (I am NOT a cinematographer so my opinion may be non-professional) but the green area at right side of the first image looks posterized. Not many bits of color depth???

Are your posted pics from the actual frame or represent a small area blown up? Post a link (such as Dropbox) to some individual DNG frames.

You're probably seeing the dreaded "cross hatching" problem:

There's a big thread about it called "Cross Hatching Wont Go Away"
https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=51936

Blackmagic isn't really interested in fixing the underlying problem, so you'll need to read that thread for some workarounds.

Oh, and for the record, your sensor looks normal for a properly functioning Blackmagic product. This is the image they produce; whether it's what you want or were expecting is up to you.
