BMPCC 4K Won’t power on with any battery

PostThu Dec 13, 2018 4:43 am

Hello! Need to ask here before sending back to BM. Just got my camera in today. When I first opened the box I charged the battery in and it wouldn’t turn on. Tried two other fully charged Canon brand batteries same thing. Then plugged into wall power and it worked well. Unplugged that power with battery in and it worked with just battery now. Can turn off and on. Let it set for about an hour and went back to same thing. I get red flashing light when I try to power on but nothing happens.

Thanks for help.

How did you first charge the battery when it was in the camera? How did you know it was charged?

Later after the camera has been on operating from power, presumably BMD’s supplied mains power to DC, what else was connected to the camera and powered on?

Why these questions? I’m just wondering if you were not actually supply enough wattage to the camera to charge the internal battery. So if you know what else was using power, and it was anywhere near 30 watts, then you are not charging the internal battery. If it’s only the camera, I believe we were told recently that it draws about 22 watts. The AC/DC supplies 30 watts and therefore that would power the camera, but if you had other items attached and on, you may not have enough power supplied to charge the internal battery while the camera is operating.

Have never seen a flashing red power light, you'll get no light at all when the battery's dead, and the red light will turn off when the internal battery is fully charged from A/C power (when the camera isn't on).

As charged Canon batteries aren't working either, I would assume a defective camera.

Where does one purchase the Canon batteries to be certain you're getting the real ones? (I'm in the US, btw.)

The odds of no battery, real or counterfeit, including the BMD battery, not working at all in the camera are pretty slim. Besides, the counterfeits do tend to work, if not well. The blinking red light suggests some unknown deep distress.

If it were me, I wouldn't waste any more time before contacting tech support.

I have had this once. It was working fine one day, but not the next, with the same battery which I had recharged overnight. Even powering from the mains adapter didn't work, just got the red power switch LED flash a few times after switching on.
I tried to see if I could find a power-on reset sequence and I thought I found one, the camera powered up anyway. Someone else reported it didn't work for them though but if yours is still not powering up, give this a try:
With the camera switched off, hold down the front facing record button (the 'selfie' button) while switching the power switch to 'ON'. Keep the button held down for at least 10 seconds and see what happens.

Toby, you should be able to get eM Canin batteries from Samy’s Camera on Bryant St, in the City.
