No additional refinements to BRAW?

This was a camera function only update. Previous AF issues are addressed in this update. I had tested MFT lens AF functions, including older adapted Four Thirds lenses, and AF is improved. Previously unsupported FT lenses now have working AF at a decent speed.

What other “Bugs” are you referring to?

I mentioned this in my earlier response:

• You can shoot up to 75fps, instead of the 60fps you’re limited to when shooting BRAW in full DCI.

• You’re saving a significant amount of storage space – 20% – both on the camera’s drive/cards and your computer’s hard drives. Since I’d primarily be doing this when shooting for slomo, the savings can make a difference.

Edit – I just went out and tested this – it was great seeing the shot come out of the camera exactly as I framed it. And that additional 15fps makes a clear difference. I’m really pleased!

Yes, I have been testing this for the last month, I was able to get full coverage with a Elite 9.5mm lens, which justs barley can cover the Micro Studio Camera S16/1-inch Sensor. The 2.6K has better coverage, and is about a S16mm diagonal in 16:9. Longer focal length S16 lenses should give better coverage.

I also tested a true S16 film lens, the Angenieux 17.5-70 Zoom, and it also has good coverage, similar to the Micro Conecam and original Pocket camera. That said, older 16mm C mount lenses in the wider focal lengths may not cover the 2.6K window.

Gimbal Support is in place in the new FW, but still needs the Gimbal manufacturer’s to implement this on their end. It is not something you Re going to see in the ca era menu. See Kristian’s response on this on pg 1.

Will the Firmware updater run on that system?

I saw the preferred OS was either Catalina or Mojave but hoping not to have to upgrade to those bulky slow OS upgrades.

Yes, I used High Sierra on an iMac to load the beta version, no issues, but the update does take som time to load.

When the front LED is blinking, the camera is updating the software that has been loaded successfully. You should have it connected to power and leave it running for a few minutes.

Be patient and let the camera upload the new FW and reboot, this all takes several minutes. Do not disconnect anything, or turn the camera off until the update is completely finished and the camera has rebooted. ;)

Here's hoping that a future update will make dual card recording possible. Shooting Braw on Cfast and having a backup on the SD (even if its only Prores proxy) would be amazing.

I tried to update the firmware on my BMPCC 4K on 3 different Windows 10 laptops from 2014, 2015 and 2016 with USB 3.0 ports. They wouldn't see the camera on any of their ports.

I dusted off a 2005 Windows XP laptop and although it would recognize the camera, the program wouldn't run.

Is there any way to get a modern Windows computer that does not have a USB port that has been obsolete since 2008 to see a BMPCC 4K camera?

I had to use 2 different USB 3 ports before the camera was recognised, I also turned it off and on again between USB plugs

Everything ran smoothly with the update.

Good update. I only recently bought this camera and am enjoying it immensely. Love the 2.39 aspect ratio which is what I like to shoot in.

Thanks Sam,
I plugged the BMPCC 4K into the lower left USB port (this one has been slower than the others in the past), turned the camera on and then booted my MSI GT72VR gaming laptop. Like before, it did not see the camera. I went to recently installed programs and ran the install program. For the first time, I saw a picture of the camera and it had identified the current firmware version so I clicked to update it. At 70%, I got a pop up message that Windows 10 had discovered the camera, asking me what I wanted to do with it. Two minutes later it finished the upgrade to version 6.6 and the camera appeared in Windows Explorer.

I'm happy now.

It's gone from the top right, and when i tap it the icon comes back but in voltage reading only.

Is it like this for anyone else?

Re: Firmware 6.6 BMPC4K BMPCC6K Feedback

(Apologies if this has already been discussed.)

BUG?

After installing the new firmware on my Pocket 4K, I created 2 presets.

One preset has Auto shutter ENABLED with shutter speed display format (1/x sec) selected.

The other preset has Auto shutter DISABLED and 180 degree shutter angle & SA display format set.

When I repeatedly switch back & forth between the 2 presets, about 25%-50% of the time the preset with Auto shutter DISABLED won’t be running at 180 degrees. Instead it’ll be something weird like 116 degrees ... the shutter speed (fraction) from the other (Auto shutter) preset, converted to degrees.

The previous firmware didn’t do this. It always set my “shutter angle preset” correctly, to 180 degrees.

Unfortunately the new firmware is intermittent in this regard, so I don’t have exact steps to reproduce this issue. Anyone else seeing something similar?

I was really hoping for a 2.6K ProRes shooting mode on both cameras. It's the perfect resolution for 1080p delivery without the 4K file sizes.

Isn’t their a project setting option where you decide if you want to display voltage or percentage? Not all batteries support percentage readouts.

Radu, take a look at the Easter Egg thread. Looks like NVMe drives can be used so there may not be any need for dual card options. 1200 MB/s!

Yes, tested my Jeyi NVMe USB C enclosure. Seems to work OK. I think the USB C port on the camera wont support that high a speed though.

Another thing I haven't seen noted yet is that the audio meters have a bigger range now. Used to go down to just -40db but now its -60db.

I agree. Also make the horizontal and vertical lines longer so it is easier to see (like on the GH5).

Nothing has changed with HDMI Timecode and record triggering when connected to a MixPre3. Timecode is accepted by the MixPre3 but record triggering does not work, just as with the previous versions.

Would be enough of a reason to get me a P4K once my old Pocket dies to keep using my beautiful 16mm glass. I got the Angie 20-80mm, which will then cover for sure. Some older wides also don't cover the first Pocket.

This firmware update totally bricked my official Canon battery. I plugged the camera into AC while loading firmware. I had a freshly charged battery in the camera as well. After the update I turned the camera off, unplugged the AC, turned the camera back on, and....nothing.
I took the battery out and put it on the charger and it's not even being recognized.

Also now the percentage meter is completely gone on the P4K menu. Only shows voltage. :?

Thank you for the info!
It is On yet it is greyed out.
I want to shoot 2.8K Braw Q0 with a Normal lens (not anamorphic),
essentially chopping of left and right sides for chroma key
as do not need that width, essentially a 4:3 recording.
In camera everything is stretched horizontally to fill the width of the lcd
instead of leaving black bars left and right.
On the computer, braw player opens the file in 4:3 mode displaying correctly the PAR.
Is there a way to make the camera display the PAR properly (1:1)?

These updates are great, especially for the 4k but the updates for the 6k don't quite match. Wish there was a 75 fps option on the 6k as well and touch autofocus is till spotty for me. Also wish that the 6k would work with my 256 GB toshiba exceria pro card. The 128 GB version is listed as supported but not the 256gb version. Doesn't make sense to me. Glad about all the updates we are being given though and it is still a wonderful camera.

Thanks for the response, I haven't yet no, that's a thing? lol. Anyways it was reading the battery
just before the update because I remember checking the battery gauge before I did the update and then remembered I needed to plug it in. Anything I can do? Should I downgrade then upgrade the firmware again? I did jump from 6.2.1 to 6.6 because all the others in between had nothing to do with my camera.

I totally agree. I don’t shoot in BRAW because I edit in Final Cut Pro X. 2k Pro Res is what I shoot on both my G2 and UMP but for my c and d cam which are P4K and P6K I’ve been shooting 4K which is overkill and earring drive space. Was really hoping for 2K ProRes to meet in the middle.

Same only the voltage shows now. On any battery brand I put in, including the original. Was fine before the update.

I can verify my BMPCC4K is fine running from the internal (BMD) battery after upgrading to 6.6. Shows voltage 7.5VDC. I don’t see an option to show % on the battery display but that may be because the BMD battery doesn’t support that so I need to try that with a genuine Canon LP-E6.

Okay the genuine Canon battery displays either voltage or percentage. I feel voltage is the best measure as we know the battery will only safely go down to 6.2/6.3VDC. A prior post of mine was incorrect. There’s no project setting to select voltage or % but you toggle from the HUD.

Firmware 6.6 BMPC4K BMPCC6K Feedback

PostFri Oct 25, 2019 2:41 pm

And I want the option to have a 1.33x anamorphic squeeze if the 2.8K window as that’s the ideal window for economic delivery of DCI 2K widescreen (while 2.6K is already perfect for HD widescreen).

Really hoping these comments will help BMD make a few tweaks to a great firmware update and put out a 6.6.1 release in 2019 or when they are able. We know they must have a tremendous workload already at this time of the year.

Yes, you toggle the battery voltage/ percentage display by taping the battery icon.

Press the magnifying glass to zoom in then 2 finger pinch to zoom in further to 8x

Interesting note I found today, if I set my camera up to record HD 120fps BmRaw 8:1 and then switch to ProRes 422 it keeps the 120fps offspeed, I haven't actually tries hitting record or anything, it just says it in the setting/on screen

Doesn't work -- and boy, I've tried. Anyone else seeing it fail?

Not on mine. Tapping it toggles between voltage and blank space.

Are you pressing the magnifying button first?

Although I’ve several times reminded folks that 2x anamorphic squeezes should begin with a 6:5 aspect ratio window as you suggest but those posts have been drowned out with a near universal request here for a 4:3 aspect ratio window like their favourite Panasonic camera. You know BMD listens and gave people what they were asking for on the Pocket4K. Still agree that 6:5 is better, but I’m not faulting BMD in this.

I didn't know this. I found it always great on BMD cams that they do 6:5 rather than 4:3, as it makes so much more sense for 2x and saves me one step in post. Whelp, guess you can't have it all.

Or can I?
I mean, there's surely no reason why not both, 4:3 and 6:5 could be implemented :)

Best,

John, tap the screen to show the traditional 2x zoom. Then a slow two finger pinch will slowly zoom in further, you can stop if you like 4x or pinch further to 8x. After that, any time you hit the Zoom button, you toggle between 8x and full view for example. I don’t think that setting survives powering off the camera.

Okay, if anyone else is confused, once you're in 2x mode, you don't pinch inward, you pinch outward to increase the magnification. Then inward, to reduce it. One finger will move the area of magnification.
