4k Production Camera Internal Exposure Monitoring?

Hello Blackmagic Community! I'd love to hear your thoughts on how you plan to meter exposure levels using your new 4k production camera. Light meter, 3rd party external monitor that has included wave forms? What will it be? Thanks!

In camera zebras. Then looking at the monitor after setting it to the proper ISO setting where the noise is acceptable. Then light meter.

Interesting, although I'm not sure how this relates to what tool you will use to set exposure on your 4k production camera. While it provides an approach and predilection to setting exposure, it doesn't really comment on what tool you will use. Interesting though, none-the-less, I've never experimented much with exposing to the right, which I've found is only useful while shooting raw.

Maybe I've missed it, will there be any form of brightness histogram or exposure waveform the camera can generate?

Actually i just wanted to see if the forum will allow four-letter-postings... ;-)

I'm not in for the 4k, but waiting for the pocket (and since yesterday considering the 2k5 at its new price). Most of my work is either available light or very limited control over lighting, in unprepared realtime shots (concerts, documentary, events). So the best i can do is prevent the recording from clipping while still getting as much bits filled as possible to do the rest in post - i am the classic example where ETTR works.

The cameras can display adjustable zebras, which indicate sensor clipping.

You can connect a Thunderbolt-equipped computer to the camera and run the included UltraScope software for WF/VS scopes.

Thanks Peter! Good to know I can utilize zebras, mainly I just want to be able to see where my highlights are falling. I guess setting zebras to 80% will help me maintain a range of around 70-80 IRE, or thereabouts. The Ultrascope software seems like a good option too, although, might prove cumbersome on set when trying to constantly throw an image out to the DIT, especially on location shooting.

I think what I'm looking for is an external monitor that can provide me the functionality of Ultrascope. I'd like wave forms, vectorscopes, and RGB parade all generated by an external monitor. Can you recommend such a device Peter?

As noted in the FAQ here, concerning zebras, see:

The FAQ is here:

There are a variety of external monitors & EVFs which can display various data; I'll leave it to others to make recommendations.

I recently got an Ikan VX7e monitor which has pretty good options for exposure monitoring (I'm just concerned about its compatibility with the BMPC4K after some rumors, I just posted a question on the respective topic about that). After all, I'd like to see what I shoot in conditions where the on-camera monitor is too reflective to see anything. Of course, good old light meter will always be a part of the process.

FYI: Not a substitute for an external monitor or EVF, but helps a bit and is very inexpensive:

Useful, thanks! Though, as I wrote above, I plan to use my monitor for the valuable exposure monitoring and focus peaking etc. :) Could be a good solution for fast shoots, if I ever need one.
