Camera not recognised in Mac OS 10.14.6

PostMon Feb 03, 2020 2:01 pm

Hi,
I try upgrading our BMPCC 6K software with the download made recently available by BM.
All working well until I plug the camera to the computer via the USB c socket. I check the cable, the same I use to import files from the external SDD HD and it works fine.
But Finder won't see the camera and the BMC setup software neither.
I tried the standard remedies, re-pluging, rebooting computer and camera and so on to no avail.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.

Uninstall old camera software, install new one.
Start software, connect camera via cable to computer.
Switch camera on. Normally the software should detect the camera now.

It didn't work!
I uninstalled the camera software, installed the new one, open the software, connected the camera and turned it on. Neither the camera setup program or Finder can see the camera plugged.

Thank you Denny. Unfortunately, it doesn't work.
The camera setup program still can't see any cameras.

Baffled!

Fernando, have you been able to update the camera with this system ever before?
Or is this the time you are trying?
What type of cable are using exactly?
Do you have another cable to try?

on a Windows laptop, I was a bit surprised to see that the camera was not recognised at the USB 3.0 port. Tried again and again, no connection. Then I plugged the cable in the USB 2.0 port, and the camera was recognised instantly.

The cable I used is a type A to type C, USB 3.1.

Maybe you can try a different USB port, and/or a different cable.

Another thing: Maybe the camera got blocked in OSX's security system:
System Preferences -> Security and Privacy ->General

Thank you all.
I only have one cable, USB c to USB (which I guess in a 2013 mac pro is USB 2).
The cable is the same I use to import files from the SDD hardrive I use with the camera and it seems to work fine.

No, I have never upgraded any BM cameras or hardware before.

I have found something different on the page Robert suggests, to allw BM devices to be recognised.
There is no sign or panel on System Preferences/Security and Safety/general saying anything has not been allowed or recognised.
But I discovered I don't seem to have anywhere a program called Desktop Video Setup or Blackmagic Video Setup! Is this necessary

I'm going to see if this is available on BM website. Just in case attached I send a pic of the BM stuff in the computer's applications forlder.
Many thanks for your help!

I found two downloads at the BM support page.
I wonder if these are the ones I need?

Thanks again.

I also installed Desktop Video just to see if it cured the problem but no.
I wonder if the problem is going through USB2 ports.
For some hardware, BM states to use USB-C ports (I guess because of the need for speed),
does anyone know if the camera is compatible with USB 2?
Can it be updated with a SD card internally?

I can't find any USB-c to Thunderbolt 2 on amazon and so on.
Any suggestions?

Desktop Video Setup is only needed for Decklink / UltraStudio and other capture/playback hardware.

Your USB-C to USB2 cable could indeed be the problem. You should go for a USB-C to USB3.x cable.
According to the MacTracker database your MacPro 2013 has got 4x USB3.0 ports - those should work with the USB-C to USB3.x cable.

USB-C to USB2 cable probably doesn't exist, only USB-C to USB 3.0 or USB 3.1. But anyway, it's a good idea to get a new cable and see if it works. In the worst case, you can use that new cable on a different computer from a friend to update the camera.

No, you need the "Blackmagic Camera 6.8 update" - and as Robert suggested, try a different cable. Or better, if you have any chance of using a MAC or PC with an USB 2 port, try it there.

Since this is your first update, this might be a bit of a hassle. But after that it gets easier, because BMD has fixed the USB-problem in newer update-versions.

Sadly, no.

Finally I was able to update the camera firmware .
Two issues: the cable in combination with some of the Mac Pro late 2013 USB sockets. They are Two 3.0 and two older.
Thank you very much for your suggestions, help and kindness.

Just updated, had the same issue, camera was not found. I tried using USB2 and USB3 ports. Got it to work through a USB3.1 port. I used the same USB-A to USB-C cable with all attempts.

I think I had the same trouble when I last updated (same machine but was running Sierra at the time).

Thank you Timo; yes, I suspect there is a compatibility issue with some of the USB ports on Mac Pros. No big deal 'do.

AFter you uninstall then install the setup app (downloaded from the website), Go to APPLICATIONS and open the Blackmagic Camera Setup in "Blackmagic Cameras" app. Turn on the camera and plug it in via USBC cable and the Update window pops up. Click UPDATE. I was having the same trouble you were but I just needed to open the Blackmagic Camera Setup in "Blackmagic Cameras" app

We had some of the USB ports on a 2013 MacPro going faulty. IIRC it were the front ones and the rear ones still worked.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.
