how do i clean up this mess?

what would you do to make this video usuable...i mean...horrible light, hot spots..etc?

Was this shot in RAW? If so, could you please post a DNG?

The shot was severely underexposed and was shot using the wrong white balance. Since it's only one frame of the shot, I quickly tried a fix in Camera RAW / Photoshop. Some temperature adjustments, exposure, highlight and contrast adjustments, got rid of "colour noise" and then ran the Dust & Scratches filter in Photoshop to get rid of the white/stuck pixels (luminescence noise reduction was too harsh, makes everything too soft).

I think it's very hard for us outsiders, to correct your image, because we don't know its context. So it can happen, that knowing the context I would leave the images as is right now in your original version. But it can happen also that I would change it to something better looking. The answers are in the story you want to tell.

Cinema and great cinematography is not about technically perfect images foremost. First and foremost images are to tell a story, to convey an atmosphere, technological excellence comes only after that.

As the therussian2 mentioned, how you may want to correct the image is subjective and depends on your intention. For example if I would have left the temperature much warmer, almost as it was, the footage would have had a completely different mood. Since you asked for a "clean up" suggestion, my correction above is merely an example of what could be done with the RAW file to get it more technically accurate.

Frankly, this image is so underexposed, I think it's not worth using at full frame, HD output. If you do something creative, like put it in a small container or something where you can shrink the clips size, it might work. The amount of noise once you bring up the exposure is just horrendous. I used to have really good de-noising software, but I haven't used it in a long time. Maybe that would work, but for the amount of noise in this shot, you would soften the image up dramatically.

I thought i'd give it a try, here's my attempt.

I dont think it's too bad, though there is a good amount of noise

But perhaps using neatvideo or resolve , you could tone it down a bit more. just to the point of it being a bit more usable.


This was a quick attempt in CameraRAW.

I think the main thing is white balance, but besides that I think it doesnt look to bad for what it is ; a Quick candid behind the scenes type clip (I assume)

the problem was that i left the camera in the wrong hands, somebody who never ever used it.

now i got many minutes of this, I have to fix it some way. I'm not so good in post work, my goal is to make this usuable.

That depends on the software you're using for your RAW footage post workflow. Is it Resolve? Lightroom? Camera RAW? Something else?

In Resolve, load the shot in a new project, and adjust the exposure and white balance in the "Camera RAW" tab of the project settings. You could then try Resolve's noise reduction feature, but it may make the footage too soft. The alternative would be loading all DNG frames from the shot into Adobe Lightroom, correcting one of the frames to taste, and syncing it over the other frames. This may also be possible with Adobe Bridge and Camera RAW, not sure though. Automating a batch "Despeckle" filter on all frames could be done with Photoshop action scripts.

Ok, the only acceptable solution I found is to change Radius, fixing white balance (but still leaving that yellow look, or the image gets too de saturated)...still i don't find a way for the colors to get brighter but that would be a miracle.

This camera as such an amizing look that the grain is acceptable, radius helps me to "hide" the spots.

btw I couldn't add no lut, the footage would be even worst
