Playback CinemaDNGs on location...

PostThu Sep 05, 2013 6:39 am

How can I play back CinemaDNGs (as a video) on location? I have a Macbook Pro 13", which doesn't run the Resolve software. Any other software I could play back my footage on location?

Thanks

They just came out with a free program called Scratch Play from assimilate. It will playback any format you throw at it. Www.assimilateinc.com

Speedgrade does a decent job on lower computers.

Crashes when I try load CinemaDNG sequences. Works fine for ProRes and other footage.

Yup, as far as I can see, CinemaDNG is not supported, just Camera raw.

- Camera RAW - RED, ARRI, Sony, Canon and DSLRs
- Editorial/VFX - MXF, DPX, OpenEXR, and ProRes
- Consumer - QuickTime, WMV, and MP4

If I need superfast daylies on set, I plug in a Samurai and record them in low data DNX- don't even need a computer, just plug the Samurai to any screen and play them back.

That's too bad. I didn't see that cdng is not supported. Otherwise it's kind of a neat program for reviewing.

So... anyone could tell me some reliable solution for replaying the footage on location?

But hey... I'm so dumb... I can play it back natively on the back screen of the BMCC.... problem solved :D

I do believe Frank gave a reliable solution. It would even give you a backup if the internal SSD goes to hell.

The next update to Adobe CC should allow you to play back in various platforms as they've added cinema dng to the native file formats in the october update.

Guys,
From what i can see CinemaDNG are supported on PLAY, at least when they come from BMC, Ikonoskop or even Aaton and RawMagic (converted from MagicLantern raw)....
Ensure you have latest PLAY build (770).

Cheers

Does the BM Hyperdeck not do this?

http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/product ... eckshuttle

I know it wouldn't playback RAW cDNG files...but it should playback ProRes or DNxHD no problem.

To the original posted, that's the route I would go. Just buy a hyper deck shuttle and record in tandem. It's the cheapest SDI recorder (I think - $345) so you would have ProRes/DNxHD files that you could playback on set immediately, on an HDMI or SDI monitor.

CinemaDNG works fine in Premiere now. Hopefully, compressed CinemaDNG wil soon, though there's only one camera out there that uses that format, and it's only been doing that format for one day. :)
