Pocket and Low Light test

PostThu Sep 05, 2013 7:44 pm

This test is made to check the Voightander Nokton f/0,95 25 mm lens on the Pocket.
The indoor scene is only lit by three candles. The outdoor by the last light from the darkening sky and some cars passing by.
Everything is shot with a wide open lens and 1600 ASA, the sector is fully open.

Check it out

Very nice. Looks very good in the low light with that lens.

Yes the lens is amazing and fits the pocket just fine. I have been shooting some doc material with it and it delivers. The problem with the camera is that it is so light that it makes hand held shooting difficult. Every movement by the hand becomes visible. My solution to this was to attach a monitor horizontally under the camera. In this way I could shoot using both hands and that made it less shaky.

Impressive low light performance.
I think the hand held movement in your clip has a certain charm.
You have a steady hand too.
The lens does well.
Thanks

Peter, that looks wonderful - thanks for posting.

It's exciting for me, as I'm picking up the 17.5mm Voigtlander, so this is great to see!

By the way, the stabilization in Resolve is extremely easy to use, and seems to do a pretty good job of reducing/eliminating micro jitters.

Thanks all.
I have tried stabilization in Resolve and use it a lot to remove small shakes in "static" handheld shots. I do not however find a way to use it properly on walking and panning shots.

Speaking of stabilisers, the Pocket would be great for a hand held stabiliser.
Never tried steadicam myself but I hear it is very tiring.
The pocket would be ideal I would imagine.

You could use something like the Edelkrone Pocket Rig.

Great footage, not too keen on the 0.95 though, looks a bit soft at times (probably gets nice and sharp at higher apertures).

Yes it can feel soft at fully open, but sometimes I like the less crispy effect from these lenses. I will also try older S-16 lenses to find an optical look.

Just wanted to mention that my Voigtländer 17.5mm f/.95 arrived today. I haven't had the chance to do more than mount it and point the camera around... but I can tell I'm going to love this lens.

It is an investment, but I know it will be the primary lens I use most with the Pocket. Feels wonderful on the camera, and the bokeh is fantastic. Now I'm having lustful thoughts about its 42.5mm big sister... but that's off in the future. I wouldn't buy the 25mm at this point, as that's just not enough of a difference to justify another four-digit purchase. I'd rather bracket the field.

You can focus the 17.5mm down to within a fraction of an inch of the lens! It acts almost like a macro. Very versatile. Walking around with just this one lens will give a tremendous amount of coverage.

I imagine that a small bag with the 17.5mm and the 42.5mm would cover an extremely wide variety of circumstances, and I'd far rather work with these fast primes than a zoom. As Peter showed, you can pretty much shoot in the dark!

Things are a little hectic now, but I can't wait to get some footage. Yes, my cat Milla will be involved.

Hi Peter,
how much NR have you used in Resolve, probably around 5-6? RAW or compressed? Have you tried shooting at 800 ISO and then boosting up in Resolve. Is there more/less noise? I am starting to think that the camera should almost always be at 800. This is of course from my BMCC experience.

Cheers,
Milen

As I remember I only used around 2 NR. My goal with this test was to test the darkest possible situation with all the gears set to overcome the darkness. It is possible that shooting in 800 would render a similar result, less noise in camera but more due to correcting in Resolve. This is shot in ProRes since RAW isn't available yet.

Only 2 that's really great. My bet, I forgot that the pocket camera hasn't got RAW yet. Thank you for sharing this test Peter.

Cheers,
Milen
