1080P Upscale issue?

PostFri Sep 27, 2013 6:11 pm

So I shot this video with a BMCC in raw, graded in AE, edited in FCPX. Normally I make the session a 1080p session. However this time I left it as a 2K session. You can see on the second cameras (go pros) that they almost look like a live stream. Is this because of poor upscaling of the go pro footage, normally I never have an issue. I am wondering if I would have the same issue if I got a pocket as a second camera and upscaled the pro res?

I don't think it's the upscaling, but a bad combination of low-light noise, quick motion and h264 compression. H264 in this case uses (too) much bandwidth to compress the noise and has not enough bandwith left to retain details in moving parts of the image. No wonder it looks like a "live stream" - basically it is, only at slightly higher bitrates. Compared to the beautifull BMCC footage the hero also lacks in dynamic range and color reproduction, making it look even "cheaper".

I have done probably 10-20 videos with this same setup. First time I ever had this issue. Look at the dw or sjc drum demos on the same vimeo account. The source files do not look like this.

Sorry to say i see the difference in those other videos as well, yet not quite that pronounced.

Yeah there is a difference but like that one. If bm offered the pocket with raw I would just buy one of those and use it as a second, unfortunately I would assume that it would be a couple more months at least

Sadly. First waiting for the first Pockets at all: 4 months. Then waiting for my Pocket to be delivered: probably another 4 months. Finally waiting for the Pocket to learn RAW: way too much months.

I'm not sure why you are up scaling to 2k. Are you delivering to cinema?

Anyway. What ever the reason I think the GoPro footage looks just like GoPro footage. It's compressed and from a tiny sensor that does not deal with high dynamic range shots very well. It 8bit 4:2:0 compressed h264. There is not a lot of info in the file.

Even ProRes from the Pocket would be a huge step up as its 10bit 4:2:2 with a visually lossless compression. That's more than 4times the colour info of the GoPro footage.

Adam, as posted originally I usually use 1080p settings but this time I just dropped the BMCC footage in into FCPX which made the session 2k. In any case despite all the dismissals that this is how go pro footage looks, this is not normal. Go to 2:00 in

For more examples of go pro footage, pretty much watch any live action tv show if you are not familiar with it.

It must be an upscaling issue. Its not about the quality but the movement, things never come out looking like this.

ok what I was doing was grabbing low res proxy versions, the new go pro fimrware supplies both when recording. kinda of an awesome idea
